Halloween costume contest
October 30th, 2009 in reader's closetWhen my son wanted to be Yoshi for Halloween, we knew that meant homemade. We started early and used felt to create the body by adapting a penguin pattern, Simplicity 3639, leaving lots of room to stuff it with recycled plastic bags. We made a shell to attach to the back and found a rather large Mario to ride on top of the shell. We made shoe covers for the feet. The head was the challenging part. I used an old bike helmet, and attached balloons for the head, cheeks and eyes. I then covered it all with plaster impregnated gauze (like casts were made of) to create the right shape. Then I attached a felt neck and in the front used gauze material for him to look through, but to conceal his face. We also made gloves for the hands. He carried a Yoshi bookbag for a loot bag. We spent evenings for about a week and half working on this one, as we had drying time with the gauze and paint. Time well worth it, as kids were asking for his photo!
