Super Hero Girl
comments (0) November 1st, 2009 in reader's closetMy grand-daughter wanted to be a super hero but did not find any ready made costumes that she liked. She admired a shiny evening gown I had worn before so I deconstructed the gown and used almost all the material (photo shows leftover) to create her costume.
The outfit was made without a pattern; I used her body measurements as a guide for cutting. The deconstructed gown and cotton fabric also determined how the material would be used. I used the lining from the gown to line the child's dress and to make the dress collar. (She decided she did not like the collar on the neck edge so I tacked it to the yoke and wrote SUPERHERO on it. The cape is the outside gown material laid sideways and gathered around a collar made of cardboard from a potato chip box. The pale mauve cotton I had left over from a baby quilt I made. The beads around the dress are from a trip to Vegas a few years back.
The mask was cut from the same cardboard as the collar, covered with lining material and felt; decorated with flowers and leaves made from left over foam originally utilized making ornaments. The feathery part of the mask was cut from a boa I used last Hallowe'en as part of my costume. The paint on the flowers and dress was also left-over from previous crafts. The ribbon used to tie on the mask and cape was ends of ribbon not used when I made my daughter's wedding garter and flowers.
The only thing purchased was the puffy hearts and stars that are placed on the costume. I saw them in our local $ store, fell in love with them and as a last thought purchased a roll of each. Now I have left-overs for a future project!
