Re: How to Make Ribbon Trim

This is just gorgeous! I am going to get out my box of saved ribbons and have a play. I can see this trim decorating the next clutch or handbag that I make. Thank you so much for your wonderfully clear instructions.

Re: BOOK GIVEAWAY: "The Colette Sewing Handbook" by Sarai Mitnick

I would love this book to give to my daughter who has taken up sewing. She is expecting her first child (my first grandchild!) and the sewing bug has really bitten.

Re: DVD GIVEAWAY: Threads Magazine Archive, 1985-2011

I often sift through my Threads magazines looking for particular techniques when I am sewing. Having the DVD set would certainly save time. I am also giving my old sewing machine to my daughter and hopefully she will become a keen sewer and will find the Threads magazines inspirational.

Re: MAGAZINE GIVEAWAY: Spring 2011 SewStylish

Although Spring is a long way off here in the southern hemisphere, it gives me more time to prepare for it. I am planning on sewing a new skirt and light trousers for smart casual wear. They are my essentials then possibly a blouse and maybe even a dress to give my wardrobe a new fresh look for Spring. My daughter has also requested a 'vintage' style dress for her birthday - but I think I might put her at the bottom of the list!

Re: Giveaway: Teach Yourself to Sew Magazine and DVD bundle

I worked with a young woman who had been left to raise her 8 year old daughter alone. As her financial circumstances were now dire, she could not afford to buy new clothes. She told me how her good clothes to wear to Mosque were becoming shabby and how she wished she could sew. I took her through the wonders of choosing a simple pattern, modifying so it had a more modest neckline and choosing fabric. I then bought my sewing machine into work and every lunch time we would shut the door to my office and sew. She has now bought a simple sewing machine and loves sewing clothes for herself and her daughter.

Re: Book Giveaway: "Horrockses Fashions: Off-the-Peg Style in the '40s and '50s"

My daughter and I love the 40s and 50s styles and for her wedding last year, my daughter had a friend design and make a 50's style calf length ivory satin frock with fitted bodice and wide skirt. She had multiple red tulle underskirts to hold the skirt out She accessorised with a matching red sash, gorgeous red shoes and small 50s style hat with a large scale net veil that just came down over her eyes. It was a stunning outfit! I would love to win this book to give to her as a gift.

Re: Book Giveaway--Ribbon Embroidery: Simple Stitches for Easy Embellishments

I love embroidery and this book would open up a whole new world of embellishing for me.

Re: Vintage Sewing Books Make Great Modern Teachers

I have the McCall's Step by Step Sewing Book and the Simplicity Sewing Book, both published in 1969. I still refer to both for my sewing and a couple of years ago I taught one of my young co-workers to sew using the Simplicity book as a reference guide. I had a hard time recovering the book from her - she loved it too.
The photos in the Simplicity book are great and I find it hard to believe that I used to make and proudly wear some of the styles that are pictured.
