I have bee sewing for 44 years. I made my first dress at 13. I have an embroidery machine and a top of the line serger. I recently closed in our Florida room and turned it into an "oasis" of a sewing room. I have two Koala cabinets (one I picked up on Craigslist for $50!) I used IKEA cabinets to organize my stash. I painted the walls a wonderful Spring Green and have a black/white checkered floor. Because this use to be our Florida room, I have a pass through from my kitchen to my sewing room. So even when I'm cooking I can look out over my sewing room and enjoy the view. I had one big window put in for the view, but because the house gets the afternoon sun, it makes it quite warm. So the other windows are narrow and up high, which allows light, but still gives me wall space for thread racks, bulletin boards and fabric art.
My husband is retired military, so after 16 moves, to have a whole room just for myself and my sewing is a little bit of heaven.

Re: What provides your greatest sewing inspiration?
My sewing inspiration comes from where I am. I was a military wife for the first 20 years of my marriage. We'd arrive at a new base and my husband would go off to work. Since I didn't know anyone, I would scout out fabric stores and maybe make curtains to brighten up our new place. When I'd land a job, I'd need the appropriate clothes, so I'd make clothes. My sons had custom made cloth diapers, and I used doll patterns to make clothes for our premature son. Next base, the curtain fabric would become a dress and I'd find new fabric stores. Moving from climate to climate required me to make everything from bathing suits in Hawaii, to winter coats in Indiana. Now I sew for grandchildren and teach others the joy of sewing. I get a great deal of inspiration from other sewers. Have you ever noticed that people who sew are so willing to share ideas? I look forward to my monthly ASG meetings to see what others are making, to learn new techniques and to share ideas.
