I'm a young-ish grandmother of 4 teens & have been sewing since I was about 5 or 6 yrs old. I first learned from my Grandmother by hand & then on her treadle machine, making doll clothes & aprons. As a teen one summer she taught me to hand quilt, something I didn't do again for many years. Being a short person, it was very challenging to find clothing that fit, so I made or altered most of what I wore. My mother loved creativity, but disliked actually sewing (a symbol of more difficult times), so I quickly took over the family mending & sewing. I now do lots of alterations, home decor, quilting (machine piecing & hand quilting) & love machine embroidery. I often combine these techniques when making things for my own home & for friends & family, although I have a few clients that refuse to let me stop doing their alterations! As long as they allow me time for creative pursuits, I guess I'll keep on filling their requests. :>)

Re: Book Giveaway: "Embroidery Companion: Classic Designs for Modern Living" by Alicia Paulson
My grandmother taught me to love sewing of any kind - I learned to make aprons & doll clothes on her treadle machine at the age of 6 & that same year, she taught me to do hand embroidery & later counted cross-stitching. Because I was short, I made many of my clothes during high school & into my adult years and did dressmaking & alterations while moving around with hubby in the Air Force. We're both retired now & I've begun to quilt, but I LOVE machine embroidery! I got my first embroidery machine almost 12 years ago & the craft has changed a lot! My favorite project is fairly recent -- I tested a couple of old-fashioned Dutch Quilting designs on some pre-quilted white cotton stitched out in traditional dark blue thread & it turned out so pretty I decided to turn it into a tote bag. I added my initials to the center of one square & then applied dark blue fabric for the lining, pockets, handles, bottom & trim. I recently made a pair of scrolled embroidered toss pillow covers for DIL in chocolate brown moire w/ 3-D cream flowers & they turned out so nice, too! I'd say I mainly enjoy experimenting with the more traditional designs in new ways - clothing & home decor. I would LOVE to add this book to my bookshelf!

I agree about getting these cleaned before letting a pre-used garment from coming into contact with your wardrobe. As for any other damage/ moth holes that might show up, you could always use the opportunity to embellish the garment. Look for pre-made patches, scraps of matching/ contrasting fabrics to create a theme or crafty-look, another easy embellishment: wool roving/ hand or machine embroidery. It would be a shame NOT to use it after cleaning just because of a "bad" spot! Thanks for another great idea, Kenneth!

What a wonderful addition this would make to my sewing studio. I could finish all those projects so much more quickly -- from quilts, gifts that require the bias tapes to coordinate! Good Luck to whoever wins this one! I KNOW I'D LOVE IT!
