Re: Spruce Up Your Shirt Hem
I most often use the bias edge in a more formal application [currently doing white edges on a black dress], and so don't want *any* stitches showing on the front! I sew the front edge first by machine, then wrap the bias "tape" to the back and sew the back edge by hand. Very classy!--if I do say so myself that shouldn't. ;)

I've been interested in color ever since I was a very little kid, and love pretty close to every color there is. However, I've learned as an adult that I am not well-served by every color there is. As a "winter," my own natural coloring is enhanced by black and white and the brilliant jewel tones, including bright *lemon* yellow.
posted: 5:01 pm on June 7thHowever, most of the colors portrayed above would make me look sick; especially the "bamboo" would pick up every wrinkle and flaw in my skin, besides throwing off the natural colors of my complexion. No way will I buy anything to wear that will do that to me! I'd rather look good in old clothes than acquire new ones that would make me look bad.
So no, I will not be wearing any of those colors in the 2011 lineup. Thanks...but no thanks!
Re: Project Runway: A Rough Day on the Runway
I loved Mondo's ensemble! I could see Jackie-O wearing that oversized houndstooth skirt with the purple-lined black jacket, and even the striped shirt. The scale of the patterns worked well together--a fine stripe wouldn't have fit the size of the houndstooth.
posted: 7:16 pm on September 20thI agree, Mondo was the clear winner this time! [I do wish we could have seen what Casanova would have done with this challenge.]
As for the term "home-made" being an insulting put-down, the judges are just showing up their own deficiency--they must not know any good home sewers! They should consult a thesaurus and come up with a better adjective--or be more specific in describing what it is they don't like about a garment or a look.
Re: Project Runway: What's Mine is Yours
Hands down, Andy was the winner. April's "punk babydoll" is more lingerie than resort wear...unless it's in the bedroom at the resort. I agree Casanova's look was a bit "old," but are there only twenty-somethings who go to resorts?!? So, who's supposed to design for the middle-aged ladies who can actually afford a resort vacation?!!! I really didn't think Casanova should have been sent home. At least his designs were beautiful! Ivy's was not...at all.
posted: 3:35 pm on September 13thAs usual, I put myself in the challenge: What would I have made? For sure, it would have been white!
Re: Project Runway: There IS an "I" in Team
I watch Project Runway online at mylifetime.com. Every episode, I can't help putting myself in each challenge--asking myself how I would respond, what I would do, what I would make. I know as an artist I'd have a tough time working as a team with *any*one, but especially one like Team Luxe, where the least common denominator became the rule of the day! Yikes!
posted: 9:19 pm on August 31stGretchen can be a bit bossy, but that shouldn't be the reason to go home. The competition is about design and sewing skills. There's more to see from Gretchen. I'm glad she isn't gone yet.
Re: Get Your Body Scanned for the Perfect Fit
I could wish for a custom "sloper" which I could then use to tweak the patterns by which I sew. If a body scan could produce one for me, I'd be willing to pay a chunk.

Exquisite little jewel of a dress--multiplied how many times? Beautiful work, well-interpreted!

Gorgeous! You have totally inspired me to "go and do likewise"!

Fascinating! I like the two sizes of buttons, which element is echoed in the random repeating circle in the body of the repurposed fabric. Very nice!

Beautiful gown, MCarolina!--totally exquisite! I especially love that you interpreted it from your grandmother's wedding gown!
posted: 2:23 pm on June 1stSure, it would be wonderful to hear the whole detailed story of how it came to be, step by step...but this is not the venue for that. I *am* both a writer and a designer, and I recognize when a demand is less encouragement and more abuse. Thanks for your cool, calm response and the courage to maintain your boundaries.
Re: Molded Papier-Mâché Form
Inspiring! I am *so* going to make myself a dress form! I already have the plaster for the cast, but have been waiting for my body to become the "right shape." I didn't know the spray foam was hard to find, so I'm glad to know there's a reasonable alternative. Thanks!
