But after making those patchwork, bell botton draw string pants in 1976, I left sewing behind for almost 20 years!
Also a serious geek and sometime mechanic. I stumbled across a vintage treadle Singer model 15 a few years back and restored it to good running condition. That project sent me wandering into the world of vintage machine restoration and use, and more recently into modern machine play too, when I started working for a local Sewing Machine shop.
I raised my now 21 year old son in Houston, and caught the quilting bug in a big way too. Now I live back in Austin, my favorite place in the whole world (where son John was born, and spend every free moment in my sewing studio, where I have a full "cockpit" of sewing machines for work and play. I quilt with a 1927 Singer Model 31-15, and embroidery with my 2009 Topaz 30... along with a suite of other lovely old tools.
Threads is a great resource for keeping up with new tools, techniques, trends, and textiles. I'm glad to see them playing on the net, nice to provide this venue and opportunities to post.

Re: New Sewing Machines by Husqvarna Viking
I just can't believe that no one mentions the fact that these machines no longer have a presser foot lifter lever! All you do is tap the pedal and the foot lifts or lowers. What an incredible time saver. What an innovation. Even the manufacturer doesn't hype this enough! I own the Topaz 30, which is a marriage of the previous Sapphire 870 (their premium sewing-only machine) with embroidery. I am soooo much more productive in my quilting and clothing work. The machine is so smart, I almost never touch the handwheel anymore, and the auto pivot feature makes turning corners (I do a lot of machine applique) something I no longer have to think twice about. Thanks for telling us about these machines... but sure would be nice if you would tell us more. Your coverage was too brief! how about expanding the info in the magazine with more online coverage?!
