Re: Project in Progress

Love the plan. The dress is beautiful. And thanks for all the detail. Fun to read. I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Re: Party in Red

Great color and gorgeous dress. I hope it's a great party!

Re: Project Runway All Stars: "Patternmaking for Piggy"

And I also loved Rami's dress. Based on the judges comments on Michael's dress (it's black, not enough pink, etc.), I thought Rami was the shoe-in. So I was initally surprised Michael won. In retrospect, Rami's dress looks designed for a daytime occasion -- horse races, garden party. Michael's was definitely more 'cocktail'.

Gordana's dress was pretty but I couldn't see Miss Piggy stylin'it. I appreciated Gordana's calm. I will miss her.

And as an aside, these designers have all been through this routine before. And each week one is sent home. Mila sticks to her 'point-of-view' to the point of almost getting kicked off ... how far does she (or any other designer) expect to go? I'm successful if I make it to the fifth challenge? I'm successful if I make to the final three? I'm successful just being included even if I go home early?

Re: Project Runway All Stars: Return to the Runway

Since I feel like I know what to expect of the designers, I was pleasantly surprised that I _liked_ the change up in host and judges. I'm thinking this forces a change in editing -- the designers have been there, done that before, and the host and judges are new elements -- perhaps there will be less drama and more style than previous seasons, no?

I will continue to watch. Although most of the designers seem more polished this time around, I'm going to go with Mondo to win (my personal fav), Rami, and April ...

Re: BOOK GIVEAWAY: "The Colette Sewing Handbook" by Sarai Mitnick

Although I have sewn for a few decades, what I don't know is more impressive than stash. This looks like a terrific reference and, yeah, I hope I win too!!! Why not? (grin)

Re: Mother Nature halloween 2008

Great dress! And story ... thanks.

Re: Vintage Upcycle

Wow! Very special, your granddaughter is very lucky. I love the detail you put in this post -- the time you spent in all the fussy cutting and planning really shows. Thanks.

Re: 80s Jacket Makes '11 Clutch Bag

Very nice! (Now to have a jacket to go with it .) The lining is very pretty too. Please tell, what is the cute method for the flower construction called? Thank you.

Re: Magazine Giveaway: SewStylish Summer 2011

I'm sewing to complete the linen/cotton grey pants with the high 3" paperbag waistline finish inspired by last summer's SewStylish.

Re: Mary U's sewing projects

Beautiful! This is classic. It looks like it will be cozy and fun to wear.

Re: Reversible C4 pullover

I love it! Very cute, very chic. Looks so comfortable. Thanks for sharing your inspiration, too. I wouldn't have thought of doing this in toile, but it looks great ...

Re: SewingLove

Your daughter is very lucky to have a mom that sews. Beautiful!

Re: formal gown for cruise

This is lovely, what beautiful fabric! I hope you had, or have a wonderful cruise. The dress looks great!

Re: MAGAZINE AND DVD GIVEAWAY: "Teach Yourself to Sew"

I've been sewing for ~37 years. I thought I knew the difference between ironing and pressing. Not until I watched the Threads video did I realize I needed a ham for pressing, so I bought one. Maybe I've been stitching, not sewing.

Re: Project Runway: Season 8 - Finale Part 2

Not surprised at the outcome, but disgusted. For me, Mondo's show was #1, Andy #2, and Gretchen, meh.

I watch designers for little details I can incorporate in my own sewing. I admire the technical matchy-matchy Mondo did with his prints at the seams and across the body. Running the plaid on the cross-wise grain down the pant legs was just awesome, not for my closet, but awesome.

Andy's first outfit out of the gate was lovely. I liked the draping and the grey of the pants. A few years ago, or maybe 20, I could have seen myself in that whole look (no headpiece).

OK. Congratulations to Gretchen. Good-bye Nina. Good-bye Michael. The judging has been inconsistent and if PR has another year, I won't be watching. At least not the judging.

Sews4fun: Off to find a chocolate sewing machine ... where did you get yours?

Re: Project Runway: Season 8 - Finale Part 1

Mondo and Michael were my favorites for this challenge. And Mondo to win! I am still curious as to how Michael sews without a tape measure. What is his technique? His parting was drawn out in this episode, but I've been impressed with his overall attitude and demeanor through this whole season.

Andy's and Gretchen's looks: Meh. Interesting that Mondo thought Andy's looked 2-dimensional. And like others, I've seen and worn Gretchen's look before. Just. Not. Interested.

Re: Silk quilted vest

Inspiring! (I'm planning something similar with some of my husband's old silk shirts ... ) This looks like it is just fun to wear -- nothing like custom -- and I love the piping collar detail. Very nice.

Re: A golden wedding dress!!

Wow! This is beautiful. In my wildest dreams I can't imagine putting a dress like this together. Kudos!

Re: Vintage Vogue Gown

This is gorgeous! Love the color. And I love it when a plan comes together. Also, I adore hand-stitching when someone else is doing it . I also really appreciate the detail you put in this post. I missed the pick-stitch-an-invisible-zipper article ... thank you!

Re: Debys Jacket Challenge Entry

You should be pleased with the results. This looks like the perfect jacket for a fall day. Very fun. The button detail is great!

Re: Project Runway, Season 8, Episode 11 Recap

I agree with Soli that Mondo's tops fit the existing line best. Andy did well. Although not for me, on Amazon Heidi's line looks very comfortable.

For once, I agreed with Michael Kors that Michael C.'s styling was off. However, I was taking notes on Michael C's big oversize sleeves with what looked to be wide elastic at the hem to pull them in a bit. Out of all the designs, I want the big gauzy brown jacket with hood, no ties -- a zipper or button closing please. I didn't think he deserved to be in the bottom twi but then we're getting toward season end.

Ivy's "instant Karma" moment is why I'm grateful for eyeglasses and am insisting that my daughter wear safety glasses when she sews ...

As far as the drama. Meh. That aspect of PR is getting so old. I too appreciate Mr. Gunn's calm and reasonable presence.

Re: chan red willow art

These are mesmerizing. Just beautiful ...

Re: Project Runway: There's a Pattern Here

For this challenge, I thought all the fabric designs were solid. I liked April's fabric the best and Mondo's design best ... his design would just work better in my wardrobe.

I did not understand Gretchen's larger print on a halter top -- full swirly skirt, yeah. Early on, Valerie was one of my pick's for the final three with her Audrey Hepburn vibe. It's too bad she fell apart and I'm sorry to see her go.

OK. Marilyn679, if you riff on April's look and you're so inclined, please post pictures. That would be very kewl and I'd love to see the results!

Re: Project Runway: A Rough Day on the Runway

For me, Mondo was the clear winner. I also think he was the only designer to benefit from the additional outerwear challenge. I think the jacket really completed the whole look.

The judges were incredibly harsh. Andy's pants, with some reknobberation would probably be chic and very comfortable. Still not Jackie O. but ... good grief! Train wreck?

Gretchen seems stuck in the same color palette. I also wonder if she can fit anything other than stretchy sportswear. Her look is always loose and slouchy.

Michael C.'s dress was beautiful but not Jackie. Also, I'm starting to think he has one trick -- beautifully draped dresses, although he did produce Mondo's swimsuit and jacket ... again, I wonder what his sewing technique actually is.

Re: Mermaid Goes Disco

This is beautiful! I don't seek swimwear fabric to sew ... maybe I should rethink that position. And the gloves! It looks so elegant. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Kenneth will be on Martha Stewart!

I've only had the opportunity to watch Martha Stewart a couple of times but this _must_ be a GoodThing! Have fun!

Re: Project Runway: What's Mine is Yours

How does Michael C. sew a swimming suit and jacket without using a tape measure? Mondo's design was run-of-the-mill colorful and youthful and all that, but what is Michael C.'s technique? The swimming suit looked like it fit well. And kudos to Mondo for admitting he was wrong.

OK. Andy's outfit looked like it was suited for an older clientle than April's, but he was my pick for winner. I thought April's design concept was interesting but the shorts didn't look well-made when the judges took a peak and vacation wear? I didn't get it.

Casanova wouldn't have been in my bottom three, and either Ivy or Gretchen would have gone home ...

Re: Flounce About Jacket (© Saf-T-Pockets Patterns)

Thank you for the detail on the fabric prep... the jacket looks like it drapes perfectly (front, side and back views). Love the color, this is gorgeous!

Re: Cotton Candy Dress

Too cute! Love the pink and blue.

Re: Chanel Inspired jacket

This is terrific! It's so funny you mention Britex -- what a complete surprise -- I was in SF in May. Britex, so intimidating -- ladders on rollers going to the fabric on the top shelf which must be 16' from the floor, four floors of goodies, " ... we only carry Vogue ...". I loved it! OK, enough about Britex. So this jacket is gorgeous. The eyelash trim adds so much. Your daughter is very lucky. Beautiful.

Re: Celebrate National Sewing Month

Creation, surprise! The process, the tools, fabric, texture, pattern, technique ... be it great or forgettable!

Re: Project Runway: You Can Totally Wear That Again

Mondo's remake was my hands down favorite, but I didn't mind Michael C.'s win. I thought it was interesting that the winner and the loser had so much detail in their dresses. Michael C. benefited from black, I think the green killed Peach. I wanted to see what Peach could do. I am in her demographic and I will miss her.

Based on what Michael C. sends down the runway, he can't be as bad as everyone claims. Gretchen & co. aren't as good as they claim (reference Gretchen's fitting problem for the pre-show as pointed out by Michael C. no less). Anyway, PR is edited for drama, definitely not sewing. For a sewing resource, thank you Threads ...

Re: Project Runway: There IS an "I" in Team

OK. So what I really need to know is what are we sewing for concept (minimal, 50s retro, etc.) and textile (gold, camel, etc.) this fall? I have a couple hours to sew this Labor Day weekend ... pants, I need pants.

Re: 1887 Silk Bat

Um, wow ... I'm guessing the party starts when you get there. Kewl!

Re: Route 66 Apron

Great apron! Love it!

But, can he cook? (grin)

Re: Project Runway: There IS an "I" in Team

Note to Threads: Casanova's look is from a couple of weeks ago.

The judging of the luxe team was painfful to watch. I think A.J. was sent home not so much because he gave up his design aesthetic for the team, but because he doesn't seem able to construct (at least in a short time period). Gretchen can produce.

I agree with @sews4fun. It looked like Ivy designed all of team Luxe's looks.

As for the military and lace team, I thought Mondo or Michael Drummond should have won.

After watching the luxe team unravel at judging, it was refreshing to see the military & lace team be so supportive of each other and Michael C. in the back room. Just sayin'.

Re: Project Runway: Hat's Off to You

Doh! The hat Michael C. was tasked with reminds me of the Japanese flag. Not Chinese. Double-knot Doh!

Re: Project Runway: Hat's Off to You

Note to Threads: The link to Casanova's design is last weeks' ...

OK, so Cassanova's dress/hat design combo was my favorite. Full disclosure: I sewed myself the referenced Donna Karan dress back in 1988 or '89 -- my first exposure to underarm gussets, sticker shock and denied when I went to purchase the big suede belt. Loved that dress, still have the pattern.

Michael C.'s win didn't bother me. The dress he sent down the runway was lovely, the hat reminded me of the Chinese flag and was not my favorite. I understood and liked April's concept (futuristic beach wear) but the execution was a shame. The hats were so beautiful and sculptural on their own, this challenge seemed to be about designing the right pedestal to put them on.

Mondo and Valerie and Andy are my favs so far although Valerie might be stuck in all-Audrey Hepburn-all-the-time (which might not be a bad thing). Gretchen's designs are solid and seem to me to be very commercial. Snore.

Re: Cuada Upcycled Denims Shoulder Bag

Kewl! This is inspiring. I really like your use of the pockets. This seems _so_ very practical and I imagine it goes with _everything_.

Re: Re-use Wool Coat

Very nice. I really like the collar open or closed and the sleeve is just great! Thank you.

Re: Satin Gown

This is lovely. Who makes the dress form? I love the color(and it really offsets the purple, very rich, very royal). Thanks!

Re: What does your sewing space look like?

My favorite non-sewing piece of equipment is a red Snap-On Tools-type tool chest on wheels with lots of sturdy drawers outfitted with dividers and ice cube trays (for buttons).

Regarding carpet, when the carpet wore out, I had tile installed. Now I iron upstairs because I'm afraid the dog will tip the ironing board, I'll drop the iron -- I'll chip the tile. Although I can sweep up lost pins, I'm afraid of dropping things. Doesn't happen. Given the choice I'd probably do tile again. Just sayin'.

My sewing space is located where you would expect the dining room. My second favorite non-sewing piece of equipment is a three-panel screen that I place strategically to "hide" my projects. Right.

Re: sewing inspiration

Egad! I have problems with my own fit. But a horse! LOL. Very nice, thank you.

Re: Green Paris Silk

Beautiful. I imagine wearing this is just plain fun, comfortable, and classy ... plus great memories -- planning and execution. Kewl.

Re: Dress for Spring

Very pretty. Love the placement of the design!

Re: silk painting on shirt

The painting is lovely. It would be great if you could post pictures of the shirt. The shading and gold leaf effects must be time-consuming. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful.

Re: How did you learn to sew?

I begged my mom to teach me how to sew -- I loved the gadgets -- the iron with the cloth covered cord that hissed steam, the big black handled Wyss scissors that could not cut anything other than fabric if Mom was looking, the Sew-More sewing machine with the adjustments, and cams and tension and a push button with a red 'R' for reverse. OK, I was six, my mom wielded the scissors, iron, and had me sew a pocket and the edges of a yellow gingham apron with white ribbon ties and bows. I still have it. Somewhere. I'm sure.

Sewing was a necessity if I wanted any wardrobe diversity. We shopped in the seconds basement of Herbergers for fabric. I was sewing most of my own clothes by the time I was in Jr. High. Somewhere in my thirties, I took about 5 years off.

I have made many mistakes over the years. My favorite was running low on fabric for a dress. I still needed to cut out sleeves. A miracle occurred and a piece of fabric materialized by my bed (I was cutting out on the floor, and pun intended). I cut out the sleeve. Held up the rest of the leftovers only to recognize that the sleeves were cut out of the dress skirt front. If I recall, a Threads contributor had a similar story. You can't pay for that kind of learning.

My most recent disaster was taking a twirl at the circular jacket project posted here on Threads. Or maybe it was the 4th-time-is-a-charm zipper insertion in the straight skirt I made at Easter ... I'm still in my learning years --intermediate sewer with advancing skills which match my age.

My motivation for sewing now is creating. If all the stars align, I create a garment that is unique, comfortable, and fits.

Re: Project Runway - Finale Part I

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked what Mila showed, her concept -- shadows, and her home setting -- relaxed and edgey, not grating. I am happy to see her in the final three. I agree with Soli. Mila would have a market. I absolutely love the coat Brandisse wore.

IMO, Jay's pieces did not look like they were part of the same collection. Based on the judges discussion, I was a little surprised by their decision. Heidi could have just as well said "Mila, you're out." PR is still reality TV ...

Mila would be my sweet surprise win. Seth Aaron does beautiful fit, works in more black than Irina even, and skews young. Emilio found his Pantone set (grin) which is, or could be refreshing after so much black ...

I wish the show's format showed fewer designers and followed them _all_ through a set of designs to a final elimination, slowed the pace, showed more process in the development of a project, more background on the designers (like Tim's home visit), etc. But then it wouldn't be Project Runway ... I'm looking forward to the final show. I'm amazed that the season was filmed many, many months ago and that the winner is such a well-kept secret. Great season.

Thank you Threads for the commentary and reviews. I appreciate the opportunity to share observations and opinion in a community of sewing enthusiasts!

Re: Project Runway - Sew Much Pressure

Disclaimer: I have no red carpet experience other than the occassional red wine spill .

I thought Emilio's and Anthony's designs were hands down winners. Between Jonathan and Mila, I didn't think either one was red carpet. Mila's design was ill-fitting, but Jonathan matched her ill-fitting and raised it with poor construction and concept. Jay's design was interesting in a bad way, Seth Aaron's was black, again. I admire that Seth Aaron sticks to what he knows ...

Maya seemed to have an inate sense of what looks good or makes interesting design on the runway, and a strong sense of self. I was really surprised that she threw in the towel. She was the youngest, but so what? I was betting on her as the sweet surprise. Barring that, I would have preferred to see her kicked off for a legitimate losing design than quit. Oh well.

My new final three: Emilio, Seth Aaron, and Jay.
Winner: Seth Aaron. We'll see ...

Re: Spring Sewing Projects - What Do You Plan to Sew?

Fresh Starter, but I've taken steps to become a more frequent Finisher, or maybe just not being an Abandoner of Pretty Good Stuff that just needs a little more energy and attention ...

Summer project, by May -- Oscar de la Renta jacket (V2956) and coordinating pants (Simplicity 2477, view A) in a fluid, dark lavender suiting fabric. Jacket back yoke accented with piping originating from a men's tie. Also, piping the pants side seam if there's enough tie.

Then I'm going to start whacking away at some silk shirts in distress which were annexed from my husband's side of the closet ... wrap-around skirt I'm thinking.

The biggest draw, the biggest drawback, the biggest reward for me in sewing, is the head game -- figuring out how to make it happen and working through a project -- start to finish. Or just start .

Re: Project Runway - NY State of Mind

I enjoyed the brief walking tours of New York and seeing the detail and inspiration the designers took away. Overall, I was surprised there wasn't more color on the runway, with the exception of the Upper East Side, where I expected black, gray, gray-brown, gray-blue, blue-gray, any dark color lightened with gray ...

IMO, Amy misinterpreted the neighborhood and/or the challenge. I thought it was time for her to go. I will miss her.

Maya is my pick for winning this season -- Jonathan can't create unless he's destroying one fabric to make it something else. Seth Aaron is well-tailored, zippered, snappy, and dark. Anthony is finding himself. Emilio is tiresome. Jay is lovely -- floaty and whispy -- hence pants with little to recommend. And Mila is color-blocked. Like Soli, I would love to see a woman over 35 take the prize, but Mila seems stuck ...

And so, thinking about hangar appeal -- what I would want in my closet -- Maya does designs I'm drawn to and she sticks to the challenges. She's been flying under the radar. The judges noted that they don't know her other than through reference to other designers. I'm wondering if that's so bad ...

And I could be all wet ... for all I know Maya might be the next to go. Still, love Project Runway!

Re: Project Runway - Earth, Air, Fire, and Water

I also love that Amy innovates. When she was describing the fire contained concept, I thought of the Olympic torch (which would have fit with the shape of the outfit). But all that hair ... oh my!

I give kudos to Holly, her model, who in the last two weeks has walked the runway nearly naked, and as Rapunzel in search of a tower to throw her hair out so someone can save her ...

Jonathan's design was a delightful surprise! I would like to know how he layers the fabrics and does the cutouts.

I agree with Skymom that the designs had a tenuous link to the element of inspiration. I expected to see a lot more color in this challenge and was surprised to see so much black and grey and bleh ... meh.

Re: Project Runway - Nuts and Bolts

Emilio is a poor sport. His outfit made Ping's model-behind-showing outfit look Victorian.

Jesse did alot of work to be sent home ahead of a string and washer "swimsuit".

My favorites were Maya's followed closely by Amy. Then Jay. For the record, I can't imagine making an outfit from materials I picked up at the hardware store ... kudos to the designers who ponied up to the challenge.

Re: Project Runway - Week 6: Mini Models Take the Runway

OK. When I saw Amy's outfit, I thought "oh, she's using after-images ... ", the color you see if you stare at something for a long time and then look away. How boldly subtle even as she was using pure colors. I was surprised by the judges strong negative reactions -- the colors are near opposite on the color chart --> after-image. Anyway, fun outfits for a party. Amy was maligned ...

Although Jesse's asymmetrical tucks on the little outfit were intentional, I would be always trying to pull or iron them out. I liked his color palette though (for fall).

I loved Seth Aaron's jacket and the pants with the asymmetrical stitching down the pant leg ... idea coming soon to a pair of pants near me ...

Re: The Red Wool Coat

Too cute. I loved being surprised by the clothes my mother made me and I loved watching the big Wyss scissors with the black handles when she was cutting out. I accuse her of spoiling me since I have a taste for custom -- made just for me. Your daughter is very lucky. And again, too cute! Nice job.

Re: Project Runway - Week 5: Run for Cover

My favorites were Amy Sarabi's hankie dress (colorful and floaty), Jay Nicholas Sario's dress (dreamy and floaty) and Seth Aaron Henderson's suit (sharp and edgy). Hard to believe these came from the same assignment.

Anthony had a rightful win -- colorful, details at the face and neckline, springy. As far as final three for the season, I'm thinking Emilio with scissors in his pocket, Jay, and Maya of the paper plates (LOL).

Mila does color-blocking but what happened? the back of Mila's dress looked like the arrows aligned, the front was atrocious. Is Amy stuck on hankie's? Seth, Jesse, and Jonathan seem stuck on their design point-of-views which seem limited. Although Seth did a great suit ...

I complained about there being too much designer personality stuff in previous seasons -- the reality TV aspect. Now I'm thinking that those asides give us more info on where the designers are coming from -- for example, Emilio's asides on Anna (not much construction experience) and Mila (one-trick color-blocker). PR does not spend much time showing us the process. Oh well. Still love it!

Re: Project Runway - Week 4: Hearts and Flowers

I loved the idea of this challenge -- women's heart health! In assessing designs, I sometime squint -- what is the overall impression if I squint? (I also squint when "matching" prints or plaids ...)

Since all the dresses were red, I squinted to get a sense of design and impact ... my winners: Amy Sarabi, Jonathan Peters, Maya Luz and Jay Nicholas Sario. My fav'-- Maya Luz.

Squinting, Anna Lynett's offering looked fresh, young, and interesting, but ... Emilio called it, her inexperience in construction and fit really shows. Having never made a strapless dress, I would also resort to a skin-tone tank for a "hold-it-up-maybe-they-won't-notice" effect. Full disclosure: I live in SE Wisconsin so I'm rooting for Anna to make it, at least a little further ...

Mila Hermanovski and Seth Aaron Henderson's dresses looked like the hostess and service person at a restaurant that makes the staff wear coordinating dress-ugly uniforms.

The guest models were awesome. And as an arm-chair critic, I am _amazed_ at what all the designers create with limited time, budget, and range of design requirements. Love PR!

Re: This Petti's made to Twirl

Wow! How very special and what a great garment (and memories) for your daughter!

Re: Doublefaced Italian wool sweater knit jacket...

Beautiful. I love the button!

Re: Project Runway 7 - Episode 2

I agree with Sews4fun, some of the designs were just terrific! I too always underestimate the amount of time it will take me to do a "canned" project -- i.e. I know the fabric, pattern, the client is me, etc. -- so the creativity and artistry the designers were able to tap into in such a small amount of time makes the runway results all the more impressive. I also wonder, how many burlap sacks each of the designs took ... Ping should have grabbed one more ...

Pam seemed to get alot of air time which I took as either a good sign (winning) or bad (auf wiedersehen). Reality TV. She was closest to my demographic and I will miss her.

I wish the program spent more time on the thought process and construction techniques behind the designs. I'm glad they're back in New York. Design-wise it's cranked up a notch or two. These designers are GOOD. Looking forward to the rest of the season ...

Re: Choose the Winner in the Fancy Fabric Contest

Congratulations to the final five on gorgeous work. Wow!

I enjoyed seeing all the entries, was in awe of all of the details (especially on slippery fabrics), creative design and construction excellence. It is truly inspiring (as in, I'll do better work on my own daily wear ... ) Thank you Threads.

Re: A Minimalist Finish for No-Fray Fabrics

Beautiful and very inspiring ... I am going to try the buttonhole support, next opportunity. Thank you!

Re: Project Runway Season 6 Finale - Tim has a meltdown

Carol Hannah’s first dress out of the gate and down the runway was gorgeous. I could see it with different skirt lengths and different color palettes. If last night had been judged on one look, I thought Carol Hannah was the winner.

Althea and Irina must have taken a cue from Snuggies with their sweaters. Both collections had some eye-catching detailing and styling – Althea’s pants, Irina’s coats. Irina's win? It seemed that she had immunity episodes ago and that it was a foregone conclusion.

I also look forward to a more design and process oriented PR next season. Really appreciate the blog, and thank you Judith and all at Threads!

Re: Project Runway Episode 13 - Feel the Burn

As a home-sewer,(“… no, it’s not homemade, it’s custom …”), I am gunning for Carol Hanna. Gunn-pun completely intended. I loved the lampshade, bottle-brush dress and though it would look great on Barbie who turned 50 recently. I thought the dress was whimsical, a beautiful color, and totally unwearable. How, or where would you sit down? Anyway, CH is still my sweet surprise win. I hope she feels better by runway.

Based on the sneaky-peekies, I believe Althea will win. At least Irina seems less one-dimensional after seeing her with family, friends, and dog but, please, all black?

Soli, thank you. I did not know Chris March had a blog and so I had to read all of his commentary for this season. For me, he confirmed that Gordana is more talented than she ever was given credit for, the show is skewed young (none of the final three are over 30), and thin. When Lisa picked “Willow” for the 13th look, I wanted to reach out and feed her.

Re: Project Runway Episode 12 - Who Goes to NY Fashion Week?

Chris March of the human-hair-as-embellishment is my all time favorite Project Runway designer. He was grateful to be there and his sentiment that sometimes the universe gives you love and you can take it, had me hooked. I thought Malvin this season might be another Chris.

I agreed with Nina that Christopher doesn’t know fabric. Compare the flowiness of Gordana’s long dress to Christopher’s. Christopher has had memorable designs but even with no formal design education, (rant on) for crying out loud, has he ever walked through a department store and seen or felt what different types of garments are made of? (rant off)

Gordana surprised me with her sudden alliance with Irina. I was not surprised to see gray in her inspiration and project. (OK, snark off.)

Since the newspaper project, I’ve thought Althea would be in the final three. I think she will win because she’s edgier than Carol Hannah and Irina. Carol Hanna would be my sweet surprise winner.

Irina, I believe, will be successful whatever the outcome. She is organized, presents herself well, does beautiful, albeit, somewhat predictable design.

OK, at the time of the wedding dress challenge, I was trying to figure out how to modify a men’s suit jacket to make it more feminine, fit me, be fun, etc. (sews4fun: are you looking in my sewing room?) With the challenge last night, I am at about 70%, in the meantime the designers have made three complete projects. I love sewing but I cannot imagine sewing for more than 3-4 hours at a stretch. I cannot imagine working in the same room with the same people for 12 hours at a time. (Tim Gunn makes it sound like a good thing.) And I cannot imagine spending a half hour planning a project and then be limited to a half hour in an awesome fabric store (what kind of sick show is this, really?) I have spent months and years planning a project in my head. No matter how it plays out on TV, the designers are creative, driven, and focused. They have my respect.

Re: Project Runway Episode 11 - Make it feel good

I interpreted Althea’s and Irina’s oversize sweaters and sleeves as outerwear. I would wear Althea’s paper bag pants. And the spaghetti-strap top, well, never.

Irina continues to irk me with attitude. Although I find most of her designs ho-hum and predictable, she is talented.

Gordana -- if the sleeves and jacket were shortened just a tad, I would not only wear Gordana’s outfit, I would look for the pattern. I liked the “Elvis-y” collar, loose construction, and middle details but why, oh, why the sad grey again? Although as presented, I could see the jacket with jeans. She is closest to my age and I'd like to see what she would do with the time to construct a whole collection. My husband thinks some of her presentation/self-confidence issues are rooted in her culture of origin.

Logan and Christopher continued to amaze me with their haphazard designs. I will miss Logan’s sliver pants and sneakers and bow legs. All the zippers, meh, not so much.

Re: Project Runway Episode 10 - Talk to me

There were no ‘wow’s for me last night. In my opinion, (and somewhat ironically as I’m always complaining on him), Nicholas’ tucks at the bottom of the pants was an interesting detail I might incorporate sometime(like instead of a cuff). Good-by Nicholas.

Other than that, I _loved_ that Gordana went into Mood with $150 bucks and threw $120 at the necklace. Kid in a candy store. I wouldn’t have ever even thought of using those materials to get that effect. Wow! For me, she won. Gordana is subtle which doesn’t play well on reality TV and I hope she stops apologizing for her work …

Re: Project Runway Episode 9 -- Let the sequins fly!

I find Logan and his creations memorable not because they're good, but because he's in the bottom three and is grateful to not be going home. My snidely snarky side would like to see him in the final three just to see what he would offer up as his vision ...

Re: Project Runway Episode 9 -- Let the sequins fly!

In a previous season of Project Runway, Chris March and Christian Siriano (team challenge) created a dress with an enormous ruffle collar which had an interesting silhouette. None of that this week.

I have been most surprised by Carol Hannah and Althea as designers. Carol Hannah's design looked like red-carpet wear.

I was wow-ed by Chris’ and Logan’s offerings. Neither appears to have construction or fitting abilities. Irina seems to be the snarky golden child; Nicholas, her snarky brother. Their mouths are writing checks their designs can't cash.

Gordana is honest and has concept behind her designs. I think she got lost with the challenge and will be the next to go. Honest self-assessment doesn’t make for good reality TV. Hope I’m wrong.

If you squint at the winning and losing designs, they both have the same shape and color base. On a previous episode Shirin gave us the lattice smocking pregnancy dress. I will miss her.

The process of Project Runway is at work. Reality TV rules. The best designers may not make it to the end. Beginning of season, I was sure Malvin and Ra'mon would be on the platform. My final three prediction: Irina, Logan, and Althea
Winner: Althea

Re: Project Runway Episode 8-Mentors and Serendipity

For me, the high point of Episode 8 was seeing the normal-shaped women divorcees giving up their wedding dresses and being (it seemed) genuinely happy with the results they were presented and wore down the runway. They all 'sold' their looks regardless of fit, quality, style ...

OK. Otherwise, oh! hot messes!

I didn't understand how Logan's use of the wedding dress was closer to the challenge than Epperson's. Logan's blouse had the same type of ruffles Louise was eliminated for last week, and the pants were .

I thought Irina's dress was perfect and perfectly predictable. If I tore apart my first wedding dress, that is the sort of pattern/design I would come up with. Where is the edge-y creativity?

Gordana was my pick for 1st place. She had a concept and the results didn't look like they had roots in a wedding dress. In many challenges, she seems like the supporting character. It was good to see her win.

Epperson's design was #2 for me. I was surprised he was in the worst group. He seems always honest, is happy when his clients faces light up, and he did memorable designs (the dress for his model, Matar, and the wild-west-cowboy-story challenge). I will miss him.

Re: Sewing with the bobbin thread

I've have been wondering how to do something like this ... the instructions and photos are so clear. I think I can! Thank you!

Re: Choosing an Iron

Thank you. Very funny.

I just bought a new iron -- the old one didn't have automatic shut-off ( ... left it on overnight, introduced error due to periodic low-voltage in my husband's deep-sky photography ... he wasn't happy.)

I am still getting used to the new iron. It doesn't stay on as long as I'd like, doesn't seem as hot when it is on, sputters steam when I'd rather it didn't, and doesn't have an on/off switch. I end up dancing with it to turn it on. I have not however, read the entire manual carefully, so I blame myself.

As a kid, my mother's iron weighed a ton. I'm thinking I'll go looking for a rock today ... if you have instructions, please share. Again, thank you.

Re: Project Runway Episode 7 - Blue for You

Agreed. The color palette looked like it was black, grey, and white. Not blue. I am going to use this as justification for upgrading the TV, why not?

OK. I am addicted to Project Runway ... but, IMO, it is first and foremost ‘reality TV’. The meltdowns are part and parcel of the package. How much time is consumed by meltdowns each week?

For me, the critique is the most important segment. We get a close up of the work and the designers’ defense of their work. It provides insight into how someone present (like Michael Kors or Nina Garcia) is reacting to the design.

IMO, the segment of shopping at Mood is an advertisement. The interesting part of the Mood shopping is the time crunch. How do they all find fabric and get measured? What supplies, if any, does Project Runway supply in the workroom?

The runway portion of the show is way too fast. I suspect it hides a whole parade of horribles -- poor construction, fit, workmanship. I am expecting a model to throw a shoe on the runway walk one of these episodes.

I look for design ideas and not strict execution (ala Malvin and Ra’Mon). And I’m sorry to see Louise go … to me, she had a LeeAnn kind of vibe (previous season) …

Re: Project Runway, Episode 6 Goes to the Movies

Regarding the guest judges, it seems they are overly critical when they needn't be or too lavish with praise. Feels like they're competing for a permanent seat on the show.

I thought Epperson won this competition. Especially with Tim G.'s comment "Annie, get your Gunn ... "

I will miss Ra'mon -- his creativity (fer crying out loud, he designed and crafted _two_ stunning outfits in the team competition) and his beautiful attitude and respect for others and himself. OK. I will miss Ra'mon.

I tire of Nicholas and his conceit and criticism. He may have won, but, meh.

Re: Project Runway 5th Episode - Make it Work

I was in awe of all of the designers just for working with, and creating a garment out of paper. Althea's design was incredible.

Judith, thank you for your working with paper inventory as I hadn't thought of paper's wearing properties. For now, I'm going to limit myself to using paper for patterns.

Re: Hand dyed silk charmuse coat

I wish I was adventurous enough to try hand dying ... your coat is gorgeous!

Re: Needle Felted Swirly Jacket

This jacket is just beautiful! And the memories will make the wearing even more special. And the button treatment is perfect. And the fur collar is so chic.

Re: Project Runway Episode 4 - What's Your Line?

I was also disappointed that Qristyl took Tim Gunn's advice. Since she had been dinged on the previous episode for not being strong enough (as a partner with Epperson), I wondered if the comment was made to see how much she would back down. From the brief glimpse we had of Qristyl's first dress, it looked edgier and more interesting than I expected. She should have stuck with her original idea. She definitely brought a different point-of-view to the show. I will miss her.

I agree that Epperson's design was the best. Catching him with a tear in his eye was a little much, but ...

As far as Althea's design -- meh.

Re: Project Runway Episode 3

Take away the lace chaps and I think Nicholas' dress would have stood on its own. As the dress with chaps seemed to be edging into Frederick's of Hollywood territory, I give Gordana Gehlhausen (Nicholas' teammate) major points for going along with it. Also, she did beautiful weaving/macrame on the swimsuit top. She was, IMO, the most supportive teammate of a design she wouldn't design or buy.

I don't know who won -- I don't have much occasion for surf-wear. Ra'mon looked so tired at the end, I'm glad he won.

Good-bye Mitchell.

Re: Project Runway Hatches Its Second Challenge

IMO, Shirin flat out won. Back in the day, I would have worn that outfit in a minute.

In only two episodes, it was clear to me, the completely obtuse, that Malvin is 'concept'. Based on his description of chicken-egg, I would have worn his outfit just on principle. I will miss him.

I am addicted to watching the development of relationships between the designers and watching their particular aesthetics and strengths in design emerge.

Mitchell should go home. I tire of him.

Re: Great White Shirt

Gorgeous! Great design -- the smocking looks grown up. Um, I want one ...

Re: Retro Girl Linen Pant Set

Beautiful! Beautiful outfit, beautiful girl. The grosgrain ribbon really pops. The hat is perfect!
