I wonder how the female body is changing as a result of the drastic change in "support" ... however, I don't miss panty girdles or "merry widows" once bit.

4-H! Our first project (1954) was an Indian Head scarf. The "Indian Head" refers to the fabric, I am sure. Green, durable cotton. We learned to hem, and to make a fringe. Then on to gathered skirts - which were so popular at the time. Three yards of gathering, and hemming - so tedious!

"Newberry's" (the "dime store") in Brawley, California would sell flat fold fabrics - usually in 3 and 4 yard increments for 25 cents a yard! By 16, I was "in business!" - when Aunt Norma hired me to sew my cousin Diane some straight skirts.
