I learned to 'sew' at age 7, made my first wearable dress at age 9. Mom was my inspiration and first among many teachers. Studied engineering at university, but managed to take an elective course in Apparel Design. I've sewed steadily for almost 40 years now. Always striving to improve and trying new skills. I prefer to sew clothing for myself, kids, friends, but also take on home dec and quilting now and again. Currently in Shanghai where fabric shopping is an adventure and a pleasure, after years of on-line shopping supplemented by occasional forays to Philadelphia or New York. Also, here I have a studio which beats all heck out of using the dining room table (and makes throwing dinner parties much easier). I have no friends who share my interest, so lately spend too much time on-line and not enough in the studio.

Re: The 84th Annual Academy Awards
Of these gowns, the only one I really like is the Lanvin gown on Meryl Streep. Glenn Close's gown is pretty, but busy. My favorite this year was the one-shoulder gown worn by Virginia Madsen, that is not in this gallery. I think we should leave white to the bridal industry, and strapless to the debutantes. Call me a crank :)

This is so timely - last week I was thinking that I would add a gusset to a blouse pattern that I liked. Great tutorial. Your recent Threads articles are fab - it's like a dressmaking class in my mailbox. Thanks for the helpful illustrations.
