MAKS
Mary Ann Stern, Staunton, VA, USmember
I came to sewing a little late in life, at age 40, when I decided I really needed a hobby that was therapeutic and fun. Since I am self-taught, with a few classes here and there, my first efforts were not always successful. However, with time and practice I slowly improved, and was able to make my daughter's wedding dress 6 years ago. Now that I am "semi-retired" at 57, I have the time to focus on learning how to fit myself better, perfect my construction techniques, and be a little more creative with sewing and quilting ideas. Threads magazine and DVDs have been the foundation of my learning!! Sewing and home economics classes were not available when I was young, and it is wonderful to see the new How to Sew series by Threads for the young generation. Many thanks to all of you who work and have worked at Threads.

Re: Steampunk Wedding
Julia, I am not sure what "steampunk" is; however, the dress itself, and the conceptual design, are just beautiful. The pale green was a perfect choice given the coloring of the bride, and the fit was quite lovely for her figure. Thank you for posting.

Re: BOOK GIVEAWAY: "Underwear Fashion in Detail"
It seems there is no shaping to any of the basic undergarments these days. While I am all for a more relaxed look, we may have gone too far over the edge! I think some of the fabrics in the corseted underclothing of years past may have been more breathable, and even comfortable, than much of the synthetic fabrics I find today. Another reason to sew your own!

Ms. Hayes, your design work and choice of fabrics are just wonderful. I also loved your jacket. For a person new to sewing, your achievements here are fantastic. As you progress,if I may suggest, start to practice continually on the small details such as pressing and hem and seam finishes. These techniques will become invaluable to you with your embellishments as well. In fact, Threads is the best resource on these areas of sewing. The DVD Basics by Claire Shaeffer is a great class for very little money in these techniques and available at Threads.
