Re: DVD GIVEAWAY: Threads Magazine Archive, 1985-2011
I've been thinking about getting the DVD's since they first came out, but I've had other monetary priorities. I love getting the magazine, but having the electronic version would really save time when looking for an old article, or even a series of articles.

Good Luck to all of you entering. Since I hardly make anything strictly from commercial patterns, I'm back in school, and I have 3 teens (who need Halloween costumes), I just don't have time to make a good ensemble in a month.

This episode could have been great - designing for a rock band. Where is the glitz and bling? An upcoming band just can't cut it if they don't have a look. Althought I liked Bert's look on the singer - it didn't suit the style of the band, IMO.
posted: 9:28 am on September 28thI really think Oliver blew it, since he is a mens' wear designer, how did he get this so wrong. I'm tired of his issues with time management, colors, and real people. This isn't the first time he spent most of his time working on an upper garment to get the fitting and details just right (in his mind at least), and left the bottom til the very end.
This season seems to be targeted to ready to wear, even though that's not what the judges are saying.
If I didn't like watching the general process of concept to product, I wouldn't watch anymore. This used to be about the custom, one of a kind item (unless the challenge was specifically RTW) and I miss that creative edge.
Re: BOOK GIVEAWAY: "Couture Sewing Techniques" by Claire B. Shaeffer
I am doing much more hand sewing of unique items that this would be a great addition to my library.

I agree with just about everyone - I watch the show for creativity, not the drama. This is one of very few 'reality' show I watch because I hope to get ideas I can use.
posted: 2:08 pm on July 7thThe last couple seasons left me feeling a bit blah because we didn't see really good challenges (I personally like to see unusaly materials - always going to Mood is boring), the judges were inconsistant with what they were looking for (everyday vs unique designs), and too much focus on the drama.
I really hope they've gone back to the roots of the show. If not, I'll DVR it, then just watch the runway portion. I do like the idea of a 'behind the scenes' show, but I'd be afraid they would focus on more of the drama (like other behind the scenes shows seem to do.)
Re: Book Giveaway: "Threads Sewing Guide"
I started to learn sewing before I can even remember, and have had no formal training. My mom is a wonderful 'by the pattern' seamstress and made many of my clothes when I was young. Not only am I short (4'11"), but I am full busted, so most patterns won't work without considerable adjustments, and I find myself ignoring patterns and create as I go, learning to drape on my own. I am also disabled, so create clothing and accessories that work with my special needs, and I enjoy creating truely unique items.
posted: 10:04 pm on May 22ndThis book would be a great addition to my library so that I can learn some of the tricks of the trade, thereby allowing me to cut down on trial and error to be more productive.
Re: Sewing with creative materials
As a costumer, custom clothier, and accessories designer I love articles like this. I personally wouldn't wear a 'hair coat' (althought I do wear furs), but I do love seeing different techniques on how to do things. I have come up with a way of doing something, then Threads might give me a better way, or even move my brain in another direction.

Re: What's your state garment?
I teach for a creative problem solving program that encourages the use of 'trash or found' materials for all props, scenery, and costumes so this idea is something I can definatly use for myself and the kids I teach.
posted: 7:08 pm on January 26thI also do costuming that definatly does not always use 'traditional' materials.
I do agree that many of these desings are not asthetically pleasing to me (I can think of many ways I would have used the same materials to get a very different and wearable look) but I love seeing creativity in all it's forms.
Thanks for the variation in articles!
Re: Giveaway: Teach Yourself to Sew Magazine and DVD bundle
There is a young couple, just starting out with very little money, that my husband and I 'adopted' several years before they were married. I purchased her first sewing machine after she asked to use mine and get help to make a holiday table runner. I have continued to give her lessons and help her as needed. She is ambitious enough to make table runners, recieving blankets, baby wash clothes and even stuffed animals. Her mother used to sew, but never taught her, so I'm the one she comes to for that kind of help.
posted: 10:06 am on December 16thI've introduced her to the online learn to sew series, and I think she would love to have the series to refer to at any timem.
Re: Playing with Pegboard
I have been using a pegboard for years. Since I do specialty sewing, I have a wide range of notions and accessories for diffferent projects. I keep the peg board mounted above a small table from a children's set to hold other items that don't hang well. This keeps everything neat, accessable, and easy to find. I even hang my small cutting mats using clip hangers (the kind for pants and skirts.)

I am currently teaching a young mother to sew, and she would greatly benefit from this book. Since they have little money to spend on gifts, she it trying very hard to make items for her child as well as neices and nephews.

I have been using my serger for quite a while, but still get stuck at troubleshooting tensions. I'd like to do more creative serging, and eventually would like a coverlock, but need to learn more about the machine first.
