Re: What's your state garment?
Project Runway or not, this article has little to do with sewing and belongs on an art website. Or a Halloween costume page. I understand the creativity but find it ugly.

I really like Scarlet Johansson's and and Jennifer Lawrence's - perfect.
posted: 6:37 pm on January 17thI liked the style of Ann Hathaway's but feel the choice of fabric was all wrong - needed a more elegant fabric.
Claire Danes' was okay in its simplicity and light weight fabric - works well with her frame.
I like the style and color of Catherine Zeta-Jones', but the fabric looked overwhelmingly heavy.
Re: Leaf Purse
Nice - I really like this! I would keep it for myself, too.

I picked up a copy, today. Simple, straight forward, clear, with awesome photos.
posted: 9:19 pm on October 21stI've been sewing for many, many years and would have loved to have this colorful magazine to turn to for help and inspiration.
I even learned some new stuff. Beginners will find it a very useful reference.
Re: My first suit jacket
Looks great! After all the research and alterations, it's great to be able to put a pattern on and cut the fabric out knowing it will fit the first time. I look forward to seeing the next one.

What a cute skirt, yet the pleats move it from being just cute to being sophisticated. Well done!

This is a wonderful book.
posted: 12:06 pm on September 15thI admire the women who wore some of these outfits, especially the ones 200 or so years ago. The fabric/dresses must have weighed a ton, probably hand sewn, and how did they ever keep them clean? No perma-press polyester fibre. And what did you do in a heat wave, all corsetted up? Probably, swooned a lot.
The gowns are truly beautiful and definitely are works of art.
Re: Further Fortuny
Wow! This is gorgeous! You're very talented.

posted: 4:08 pm on June 21stRe: Help! how do i make this waistband?
Christmas has come and gone - I am new to Reader's Closet. Here is my suggestion, should you ever want to make the waistband again. Make your casing, sew 1/4" or 1/2" rows and then insert 1/4" or 1/2" elastic into each row. I've gather the bottom of a corduroy jacket this way and it worked out very well.

I checked out your blog - your reproduction is amazing. You are to be applauded for the great job you did in reproducing a lot of detailed, intricate sewing - not for the faint of heart.
posted: 11:59 pm on June 19thI have several blazer/jacket type patterns and finally found one I thought I would like - I actually cut the muslin out of an old sheet(I also read your muslin article)but was dreading the alterations. Shopping for something to wear to my son's graduation(time was of the essence)I lucked out and found a blazer that, when put on, fit as if it had been custom made for me. Now my plans are to fit my pattern pieces to this jacket and save a lot of alteration time.(Having given birth to three children, my shape has deviations - it doesn't matter that they are young adults, now - this is my story and I'm sticking to the excuse.)
Once again, fantastic job on your reproduction.
Re: How to make a Chrysanthemum flower

I really, really love this dress. The color of the dress on the green grass background is stunning. The gathers, ruffles, brooch and hairpiece flowers finish it off, beautifully. Well done!
posted: 6:43 pm on May 13thRe: How did you learn to sew?
My fascination with sewing started at a young age. My mom died when I was 7, so I'm not sure how much of it was her influence. But from around that age, I was always fascinated by the treadle machine (which didn't work)we had. My dolls needed clothes, so I started designing in my head and went onto hand stitching. I received a "Skipper" doll for my birthday - she was flat chested and it was easy to make V-neck shifts.[Rectangular piece of fabric the correct width, fold over, cut a hole for the head and stitch up the sides, leaving the armholes open.] It all evolved from there. By junior high my dad decided I might be serious about this (he loved to renovate our home and carpenter) and bought me a second hand sewing machine that worked like a charm - all it needed was a new belt. I started receiving the "Miss Chatelaine" magazine (yes, I know I am dating myself) and poured over the fashion pages. I found a dress I loved, wrote down the pattern number and ordered the necessary pattern and stuff from Sears - yes, they sold fabric in the catalog. I conned our neighbor, a young mom with a seamstress background (she also had several young children and limited time) into helping me. I watched - she sewed and tutored about layout, marking, etc. The next year I started high school, had an awesome(perfectionist) sewing teacher and never looked back. And that's how my passion for sewing has evolved. I like creating from scratch. I love the colors and feel of fabrics - I'm not too big on mending.
