Longtime sewer and subscriber to Threads since issue #1. Have a wonderful sewing studio and spend some time every weekend in it. Average 1-2 garments per month. I do some quilting, but mostly sewing. Size 24 and readymade doesn't fit, so I sew for fit and for style.

Re: DVD GIVEAWAY: Threads Magazine Archive, 1985-2011

I love Threads, and I don't think I'll get rid of my complete collection even if I win the DVD!

Re: Fresh Start for a Sewing Space

Two inexpensive suggestions: 1) I made a design wall using the pink sheets of 4 x 8 insulating foamboard (around $5 per sheet). Covered it with a flannel blanket. If you'll paint the foamboard white, you can just use a flannel sheet. You can stick most fabric to it, or use pins. 2) I had 8-foot high output, low-wattage "daylight" fluorescent fixtures installed. You can just run the wires down the walls if you don't want to pay for installation. Good light is a must, especially for aging eyes. Enjoy! I love my sewing room.

Re: Mystery Sewing Machine Foot

This is a edge finisher and side cutter. I call it the "poor woman's serger." It trims and finishes the edge. That "leg" that sticks up goes over the screw that holds the needle on to keep the edge straight.

Re: Get Biased

I, too, found the instructions lacking. Take for example a very thin woman with 20" hips. If she makes the side of the small square 10" (half the hip measurement), the diagonal will be approx 14", making the diameter around the hem 26" (allowing for 1/2" seams). With my hips much larger than that, I could camp a troop of boy scouts under my coat. And the "correction" doesn't help. Please go back to the drawing board on this one. The only good thing is that too big is easier to correct than too small.
