As a fiber artist Sonjette Rodrigues is perpetually striving to express herself in a creative and meaningful way. The tool she uses for this expression is fabric. She uses the warm and vibrant colors of the Caribbean landscape, together with the designs of indigenous tribes of Africa and South America to tell her stories and create unique pieces. She is constantly inspired by the flora and fauna on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, where she was born and now lives.
"Art is a microscope which the artist fixes on the secrets of his soul and shows to other people these secrets which are common to all." Each piece is designed and made individually. There are often several different processes that each piece goes through to create the patterns. Combinations of shibori, tie-dye, resist dyeing and fabric painting are often used to produce a truly unique wearable or frameable piece of art. Working alone allows her to maintain a high standard of quality and creativity in her work.
Her recent line of jewelry compliments her creations.
