Re: Giveaway: SewStylish Spring 2012 Fashion Sewing Guide

Sounds like another fabulous edition of this magazine! Thanks!

Re: DVD GIVEAWAY: Threads Magazine Archive, 1985-2011

Winning this would save me having to flip through several years worth of your magazine looking for an article, I remember seeing/reading, relavant to a garment I am sewing now.

Re: MAGAZINE GIVEAWAY: "Quick Stuff to Sew"

I am making lap quilts for all the parents and probably tote bags for the daughter and daughters-in-law. My husband might get a lap quilt too. I need ideas for the rest of the gifts so I need this magazine.

Re: Teach Yourself to Sew 2: Two Great Seam Finishes

delovleo - The excess bias in the back of the seam allowance is trimmed after the second sewing is done. Folding it over would add additional bulk which on some fabrics would show on the fashion fabric when ironed. I leave a 1/4" past the second stitching line. It won't be seen so it doesn't even have to be neat.

Another thing to think about is adding the Hong Kong finish to the seam allowances before constructing the garment. It is easier.

Re: Teach Yourself to Sew 2: Two Great Seam Finishes

The Hong Kong finish has been my favorite seam finish for several years. I like using a contrasting color or print for a fun look particularly on unlined jackets. Yes the underside is left raw. It is bias so it won't ravel.

Re: Book Giveaway: Seventeenth-Century Women's Dress Patterns

This book would feed my love of history and my love of sewing, all at the same time. Imagine the conditions these garments were made in. Picture the ladies who toiled over these works of art. this book would be wonderful to own.

Re: BOOK GIVEAWAY: "Couture Sewing Techniques" by Claire B. Shaeffer

I need to know more about the hidden construction of garments and you have to know that to truely sew a couture worthy garment.

Re: Book Giveaway: "Little Things to Sew"

I sew for my granddaughter(8 months) and grandson(almost 6). What a joy this book would be to have when sewing for my bundles of joy!

Re: A New Improved Seam Roll

What a great idea!! Thanks!

Re: Book Giveaway: "Threads Sewing Guide"

We can all use a better reference book. I am trying to expand my skills and this book sounds like it could help me reach the next level. My reference material is scattered between different books and the internet. It would be lovely to have it all in one place.

Re: MAGAZINE GIVEAWAY: "Designer Techniques"

It is hard to pick just one favorite so I would say Chanel for her timeless style, Diane Von Furstenberg for her prints and wearability and Laura Bennett for her glamour.

Thanks for this magazine!

Re: Book Giveaway: "1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts & Tips"

Press every seam after sewing it! Sew, Press, Sew, Press...

I never use to worry about pressing as I constructed but many years ago, in a little sewing get-together, it was impressed upon me and it made complete sense and I teach it in my classes.

My next best one is to pin by halves. When pinning a seam, start by pinningboth ends and the notches. Then place pins half way between these pins, keep pinning by half until you have enough pins in. This works great when you are easing fabric like for the bust area of a princess seam or a sleeve cap and the pins get to be right next to each other.

Re: How to Make a Hat Base

I want to try my hand at these types of hats/fascinators. I found preformed POD's to try my hand at. I will have to look at them more closely to see if they need wiring.

Thanks for all this great information.

Re: Magazine Giveaway: "Quick Stuff to Sew"

I think I grabbed it the other day. Saving it to read on the plane this weekend. Love quick little projects! They are a good way to use up scraps. I would love to win so I can share with a friend.

Re: Book Giveaway: "Horrockses Fashions: Off-the-Peg Style in the '40s and '50s"

This would be a wonderful addition to my library. I love those decades for their style. The fabrics on the cover are just my kind of colors and prints. Thanks Threads!

Re: Carla's Opera Coat

Love this coat and love the I. Magnins in San Francisco, in the 60's and 70's. Fabulous store. It and City of Paris were my two favorite stores on Union Square.

The coat is a very special piece. I two wouldn't mind making a coat like it but I have no idea where I would wear it. Just owning it would make one feel special!

Re: Book Giveaway: Bags in Bloom

Looks like a beautiful book. It would be a nice addition to my library.

Re: As a sewist, what are you most thankful for?

It is hard to narrow this down to just one notion to be thankful for but I have to say that the one I am most grateful for is Wonder Tape. It holds everything in place until I can sew it. Can't live without it!
