This IS a zig-zag attachment for straight stitch machines. My Mother had a straight stitch Kenmore and had this attachment in a box with instructions. I have several sewing machines, and I have used the ruffler attachments for over 30 years and this is NOT a ruffler and never was. This just goes side to side in a zig zag motion and the screw adjusts the width The wide opening at the front allows for the width of the stitch. It doesn't shir, gather or attach bias.
