Thanks for all of your varied thoughts on these Oscar fashions. I love seeing everyone's different perspectives--it's what makes the world go round. My personal favorite was Cate Blanchett's. It made me want to get up close and see the detail and figure out how those beautiful textural flourishes were made, and it stood out to me as something different, and artful from a sewing perspective. And, I loved the contrasting color. Overall, I think that all of these dresses and of course the celebrities in them, were stunning. There weren't really any low points for me.

To Julie_in_Ohio: The focus of Threads magazine is absolutely for advanced sewing techniques. We do have a department in the magazine covering fundamentals, but by and large it is aimed at intermediate to advanced skills. By contrast, we created The Teach Yourself to Sew video series so that the new sewers we were hearing from and who were coming to our website have a place to go for information. Check out the TeachYourselftoSew.com site for further details. You'll see that lots of new sewers there are looking for direction. We do promote our new beginner video series on ThreadsMagazine.com in hopes that the more experienced sewers like yourself can spread the word to someone just starting out and lend a hand in helping the newbies along. We hope you'll help us out in that effort.

I agree! I thought the judges were right on this time with choosing Emilio. His garment was stunning, wearable, and I thought his construction skills were amazing.

--the mastery of construction techniques shown (as seen in the photographs)
--the design that best accentuates the fabric being used

It was, in fact, originally written for Sew Stylish which is geared toward a beginner to intermediate sewing audience and easing the initimidation factor of expensive, dressy fabrics was foremost in mind. We posted this to support our fancy fabrics challenge, in which sewers of all skill levels, including beginners, often enter. Look for more posts, and more advanced techniques, regarding fancy fabrics to come soon.

Laura--you are absolutely right. It IS a professional job. I would also agree that most often, garments made by home sewists are better than store-bought because of the attention to detail and overall contstruction. We didn't mean to imply otherwise. The point we were trying to make here is that this garment in particular was so perfect in its execution, that it actually looked like a commercial garment in the most positive way.

I'm so glad to hear that you've enjoyed the Threads booth in years past. As you can tell from this post, we think the Sewing & Stitchery Expo is a superb sewing event and we have always been proud to have a booth at the show. Our decision not to have a booth is in no way a reflection of the quality of this fine event. But, like so many others, with the economic climate being what it is, we need to be conscious of our spending. So, we have decided to focus our resources on continuing to put out great magazines and websites while cutting some costs in other areas. While it is dissappointing not to have a booth, I am thrilled to be attending the show and can't wait to meet all the Threads and Threadsmagazine.com readers who are there!
