Dressed for the Prom

I made this dress for my granddaughters prom. She requested a red dress with a tie back closure with lots of sparkle.  This is what we came up with and she loved it.  The dress is made...

Re: What will you be sewing this summer?

I am working on a quilt for the Quilt of Valor project. For those of you who do not know about it, you make a quilt for a wounded soldier and they present the quilt to the soldier or you can present the quilt yourself and report to them who received the quilt. Since I do not do volunteer work, I thought this would be ideal for me. I have completed the quilt top, now just have to quilt and bind it. I have had an enjoyable time doing the quilt, and documenting it as I go. They want you to include a journal along with the quilt, since the recipient does not know what is involved in making a quilt. I have taken pictures and commented during the progress of the quilt. For more information the web site is www.QOVF.org

Re: Book Giveaway: "1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts & Tips"

I was having a problem with a sticky needle after sewing sequenced fabric. A very nice person at the fabric store told me about Sewer Aid. What a life saver, I now use it all the time whenever my needle get gummy from many kinds of fabric from microsuede to sequenced fabric or if you are using the sticky backed stabilizer when embroidering. What a time saver and saves many a headache.

Re: Giveaway: Teach Yourself to Sew Magazine and DVD bundle

I love to sew and machine embroider. I have started to teach my youngest granddaughter to sew. She has made several items, starting with making simple 9 patch quilt blocks. However, recently I helped her make a knit shirt with embroidery and a simple dress. I think she like the embroidery the best. I hope she continues with this, I know she will enjoy it into her future as I do.

Re: How many sewing machines do you own?

I currently have 3 machines at home. I gave my 40 year old Elna to my daughter which still works great. I gave my mothers old Kenmore to my daughter-in-law. My machines I use every day are a Viking Designer Diamond which I purchased a little over a year ago and love it. I kept my Viking Designer SE when I bought the Diamond because I wanted 2 machines. There are days I am emboidering on both machines, it's great. I also have a Viking serger Huskylock 936. There are days I have all three of them going at the same time. So you can see sewing is my passion. I can't compete with some of these other ladies, but maybe if I had the room I would have more too. I know I would have a treadle machine, that is what I taught myself to sew on many many years ago. Great to read all these comments.

Re: What's your favorite sewing notion?

I have so many that I am not sure where to start. A good cutting mat and sharp rotary cutter is essential, plus several good rulers, also several pair of sharp scissors of various sizes. Love my buttonhole cutter which comes in handy for other things than just cutting buttonholes. A good thimble is very necessary to me, I had a difficult time finding one that fit until I found a sterling silver one at the Chicago quilt show, Love it. Also washaway stabelizer is one of my favorites although I use many other kinds of stabelizer. I just have to many to name them all. I just Love to sew!!

Re: What other types of fiber-arts-related crafts do you do?

I love to embroidery. I have a Huskvarna Viking Designer Diamond emboirdery machine and I abosolutely love it. I do many types of emboidery, I made wall hangings of all sizes and many free-standing lace items. The largest hanging I have made so far is 3ft by 6ft banner for our Pond Club. Found a design for American Doll shoes that are so cute I just keep making them. I have made at least 8 pairs already to go with the doll outfits I make. I also made a free standing lace christmas tree that is really very nice. Of course I am a person who cannot do things as the instuctions say, I always have to change it to be bigger and better. The Origninal tree instructions had 27 parts to it that you attached to a 18 inch styrofoam cone, I ended up with 47 parts on mine on a 22 inch cone. Just can't get enough of the embroidery, every item is a new challenge. Love it!

Re: Sewing Machine Recommendations -Moderate $ to do heavy work AND pretty datails

I have 2 Viking machines plus a Viking serger. I believe them to be the best, like a previous person stated they are all steel and can handle about anything. I have never been disapointed in any of my machines. They are however expensive but worth every penny in my opinion. Do buy for a reputable dealer and they will give you great service. Ask others in your area who sew and they will direct you to the best dealer. Great jobon the outfits, I also love to make American Doll clothes, they are fun.

Re: Flamenco Rose Jacket and Purse

This is a very beautiful jacket, and I know how much work is involved in a project such as this. I also do embroidery and you would think it is easy, but takes a lot of time and patience. Great Job on this jacket and I vote for you

Re: Project Runway 7 - Episode 2

I agree with the person who said that Ping should have gone. That dress was pure porn and not even appealing to me. I did like Amy dress she had some really good design and construcion as well as keeping the orginal concept of the potato sack. I think it is really amazing what all the designers did, with the exception of Ping. Hated that dress, cannot stess that enough.

Re: How do you bear it?

I don't see anything wrong with using MINK. They are nasty creatures. They didn't have any problem helping themselves by eating the fish in our pond so why shouldn't we use their fur if we want to.
