Re: No Halstons Here: Project Runway Episode 10 is "Sew '70s"

Where are the really good designers who can actually execute their visions? I'm missing people like Seth and Mondo. I love Viktor's tailoring skills, but why is it that people don't design to the challenge? Piperlime could never afford to sell that tailored jacket.
I think Bert was right on. I remember having a little dress like that in the 70s--it was a Vogue pattern, and I wore it until the 70s gave out. And the chiffon top was also spot on. Short shorts, I remember those too, but not that much booty showing...
Anya's taste in prints and designs that flow are wonderful, but she doesn't show much breadth of design, and I think her lack of sewing skills will show soon.
I agree that it should be Anya, Bert and Viktor. Josh should go soon, and that would be not too soon.

Re: Project Runway - Finale Part I

Wow, Soli you absolutely expressed what I was thinking! I could wear Mila's work and best of all, most of it is pretty timeless. With changes of accessories to meet whatever the current scene requires, you could invest in garments like these and be happy with them for years and years. That's the kind of clothing I like. I will have to retract my comments from a couple episodes back, where I thought Mila was really losing her way.

Jay's work is too overdone, for my tastes, but he has amazing potential and we should see his work around in the future. He needs to get over his fixation with hips--it seems to be the opposite of the fixation most of us have about hips! You would have to definitely have the hips of a model to wear most of his things.

Seth's tailoring is incredible, although, once again, most of those garments wouldn't be for me. But I love the look anyway.

I don't understand how Emelio got so many wins. His look isn't cohesive, not well fitting, mainly meh.

Kate W, I like your recommendations. I hope PR people read comments like yours and take such suggestions to heart. I think PR would be a much better show for it.

I, too, enjoy reading the comments from the sewing community.

Re: Project Runway -- Welcome to the Circus

I'm with you who really didn't like most of these looks. But trying to make a wearable look from circus inspiration is hard.

I really have a bad reaction to Emilio-- I didn't like this look, and I think he has a vastly overrated opinion of his work. Particularly since he's been designing for many decades and has had lots of time and opportunity to explore design ideas. I agree with Sews4fun--give us up-and-comers, not established designers. I read a recent Emilio interview where he was asked why he entered, given that he was an established designer, and he said, "for the money". Obviously, money is important, but I thought the idea was money to get a newby established, not someone who has an already established business. I think this part of it sours me on the whole thing. I did read Chris's blog after soli recommended it, and I would have to agree with most of his rant.

I also wonder about the judging--Michael Kors is particularly getting irritating. This is the first season I've watched the Runway episodes and it may be the last!

On other notes: it will be interesting to see what both Jay and Mila do. They both have their strong points. Seth and Mila probably have the most identifiable aesthetic, love 'em or not. I particularly admire Seth's tailoring--pretty amazing!

I'll hang in to the last of the season, but I'm not sure I'll bother next....

Re: Project Runway - Sew Much Pressure

On the internet you can find some interviews with Maya (remember this whole thing happened over a year ago!) and it sounds like she is doing well with her career. She said she felt she was too young and her designs not matured enough to do a runway show. That sounds awfully mature to me! But I would like to have seen her stay--I think she would have made it into the top three at least.

I like Emilio's work, but he's already an established designer--he's very well known for theatre and dance work for some quite famous companies (Alvin Ailey, etc.)and well-known Broadway plays. Plus he's designed for individual celebrities. Given that he's already been 20 years plus in the fashion business, and has been very successful, I'm not sure what he's doing on this show. It would be surprising if he doesn't win. I think Seth will be close, though, but he's also quite experienced in the business.

Personally, I would prefer to see more "aspiring" designers who haven't already established careers.

Re: Project Runway - Earth, Air, Fire, and Water

I agree that the judging sometimes seems inconsistent. It's also interesting that Tim Gunn (in his blog) frequently does not agree with them.

Things were indeed a bit too dark this week. It is hard to see details on dark material. Emilio's dress looked interesting, but I couldn't really see what was going on with it.

I liked Mila's outfit. It's something I would definitely wear. The main piece was the vest, and the other pieces showed it off perfectly. I think the judges were way too snarky about it.

It looked like Jonathan's dress was some kind of reverse applique, a la Alabama Chanin. Was all the stitching around the motifs done by hand?

Seth's tayloring is pretty amazing, but I too think it more theater than wearable.

I think we are now down to those who really can sew and fit well and quickly. I'm looking for the real creativity next!

Re: Project Runway - Nuts and Bolts

I agree that Emilio's was the worst, but it was time for Jesse to go. Only Emilio's model pulled it off for him by looking self-assured even though nearly naked--and then he dumps her for the next round. But she will be better off with Amy anyway. Tim Gunn, on his blog, remarks that Emilio has had an angel on his shoulder the last two times. But I think his angel may fly off pretty soon. Jay has had two wins, but both were in the "unconventional material" category. He can think outside the box with materials, but I don't think it necessarily means he's a better designer. I was liking Mila, but now think she is pretty narrow in her aesthetic--how many color-blocked 60s outfits can you take?

The shows are obviously pretty cropped to show what they want and to try to make things more exciting. To see more of the judging and the "safe" designs you have to go to the web channel--sometimes worth the effort and sometimes not. I don't have a tv, so usually watch online and check out some of the footage that didn't make it into the show.

Sews4fun: love your idea!

Re: Project Runway - Week 5: Run for Cover

I would have to agree that Anthony's dress did meet the challenge perfectly, and it had Heide written all over it. But I didn't like it much. I liked Seth's pantsuit--great jacket--but it certainly didn't say "spring" at all. And I'm over my love of Mila's color-blocking. That dress was terrible in all respects--color, design, and even execution (lots of puckers in the wrong places--like at the top of the crotch "arrow"). Jeanene will get the axe next, for sure. It's a race for the bottom, though. Sews4fun, you have the perfect description of Maya's dress! I realize that they don't have much time, but they seem to be out of ideas and are not listening. By the way, if you've looked at MK's website, in his video on spring fashion he sings the praises of Lady Gaga (with a nod to Madonna). Project Runway designers, take note.

Re: Project Runway - Week 3 - Iconic Inspirations

Oh my! I guess I'm the only one who loves Mila's design! I thought it was beautifully made and very attractive--except I would agree that the stripe down the leg was a big minus.
