My first introduction to sewing began around age 6 or 7 when my grandmother taught me how to use a sewing machine. By grade 7 I was taking sewing at school and never looked back. When my daughters were young, I sewed many of their clothes including bathing suits and sweats. As the girls got old enough, I sent them for lessons too, although they did not develop the same love of creation that I did. Now I also do a variety of needlework too. We recently built a log home in the woods, and as I still love to create I'm now inspired by the nature that surrounds us. I still love to make things by hand, and I'm teaching my granddaughters too.

Dresses that shine!

I made Christmas dresses this year for two of my granddaughters - simple corduroy dresses with a sheer sparkly overlay.  I opened a tiny slit at the side seam of just the corduroy to feed the...

Re: Book Giveaway: "Threads Sewing Guide"

This would be an amazing reference to have at hand! No matter how experienced a sewer is, there is always something new cropping up that needs an answer or guidance. The only reference guide that I have is very old, probably from the mid-70's, and many things have changed since then - new fabrics, notions, methods, etc.

Re: Book Giveaway: "Draping Basics" by Sally M. Di Marco

Wow! I watch Project Runway all the time where they are constantly creating such beautiful designs that frequently involve draping. I am an experienced sewer(50 years experience)who learned initially from my grandmother at age 5. Then I took sewing for six grades in school. I had three daughter and sewed almost all of their clothes. Since then I've taken several courses to build my skill level but I've never done any draping. I would so love to learn how to do it. This book looks like it would be a perfect place to start!

Re: YOUR Sewing Machine Buying Advice

I am just in the process of deciding whether or not to purchase a serger and a better machine. I bought the top of the line Kenmore as soon as I moved away from my parents home. After 35 yrs. it is still a workhorse, but does not do many of the stitches that new ones can. Also, no matter what I did, it would not sew faux suede. So I bought an electronic Singer - far from the top of the line, but it makes sewing so much more enjoyable.

My friend who has been sewing for dance classes for 25 yrs.is no longer able to sew. She has a Pfaff machine and a Pfaff serger that I can buy from her. Both are very good machines, probably top of the line when she bought them, and I don't think they are 25 yrs. old but they have definitely been around for a few yrs.

Does anyone have experience with this brand - sewing machine and serger? Can you give me any advice?

Re: Book Giveaway: "Embroidered Textiles" by Sheila Paine

I have not done any embroidery for the past several years. I used to do cross-stitch, but I haven't picked it up either lately. My favourite is probably Oriental embroidery... I have 2 pictures that are silk embroidery of birds. I would enjoy doing some embroidery again, but I would need to relearn it at this point. This book sounds like it would be a beautiful volume to add to my sewing references.

Re: Giveaway: Teach Yourself to Sew Magazine and DVD bundle

When my daughters were young, I sent them to sewing classes to try and wet their appetite for it. Unfortunately, they didn't continue with it, much to my disappointment. But, now I have granddaughters, and I sew their costumes, party dresses, other clothes, doll clothes, quilts, and I knit sweathers, hats, etc. One of them is 6 now and she is ready to learn how. We like to do crafts together and I'm so looking forward to introducing her to the sewing machine. My oldest daughter is off-work right now for medical reasons, and she is ready to learn knitting and sewing.

Re: Holiday Gift Guide

If money were no object... I'd like an adjustable dress form, and a serger.

Re: Book Giveaway - Sewing For Children

I spend a lot of time sewing for my grandchildren and doing various crafts. Years ago I remember spending a day with my kids making pigs out of old leotards. Now my daughter spends time with her friend's daughter teaching her how to do it. I'd love to have this book so I can spend time with my granddaughters teaching them the fun and satisfaction of sewing, etc.

Re: Book Giveaway - The Complete Photo Guide to Ribbon Crafts

My favourite way to spend a rainy day is to sew - clothes for my grandchildren, toys, costumes, home decor - depending on whatever mood I'm in that day. I love to find new crafting ideas, and now my granddaughters are old enough to learn, we enjoy spending time crafting together.

Re: How many sewing machines do you own?

I have an old Kenmore - top of the line in 1974 - which was the first thing I purchased when I moved out on my own. For some reason it won't sew ultra suede. I tried changing needles and tension but it just constantly skips stitches. So in total frustration, last year I bought an electronic Singer - not the top of the line - and I am totally enjoying it. I don't have a serger, or a Pfaff, or any other expensive machine, and I seem to be getting by just fine.

Re: What's your favorite sewing notion?

My favourite is a really good pair of scissors. Mine are spring loaded and have a lock on them. Second to that would have to be my stitch ripper. I have the cheap little one you see everywhere, and a good one that pros use. Surprisingly, I think I prefer the cheap one!

Re: What other types of fiber-arts-related crafts do you do?

While I love to sew clothing and home decor, I also enjoy cross-stitching, crochet, beading, and although not a fibre-art, stained glass.

Re: Book Giveaway - The Complete Photo Guide to Ribbon Crafts

Wow! Now this sounds like the best ribbon reference. Like all of these entrants, I'd love to win this book - for myself and for new ideas to teach my granddaughters.
