I started sewing in the third grade when Mrs Mutto had the girls try to make aprons as a Christmas project. I brought my project home to work on one part. My Grandma Spinneli showed me how to make it better. She was a perfectionist and my stitching was not up to snuff. When I brought the apron to school, I got into trouble for not telling my grandma not to work on my apron. Does anyone know how you tell a determined Italian Grandma not to do something...especially when you are only 8 years old?
Actually textiles had been a part of my whole life from the window treatments in the parlor made by Grandma S to the Eisenhower poplin jackets Grandma D used to make for the family. She could use just a piece of string to measure and make patterns to fit. I was amazed by the treadle machines, how quickly their feet moved and the machine obeyed. I still have some Barbie clothes my grandmother made for my doll.
My mother used to make clothes for me when I was too small to remember. She became frustrated by my growing and not having the time to sew raising a family of two under the age of three. She was not the seamstress her mother was, but she did embroider and crochet. One summer when my friend Kathy S and I were bored out of our minds, Mom created magic by drawing some figures on two white towels. She gave us our first lessons in embroidery. I still have my towel.

Re: Project Runway: Season 8 - Finale Part 2

A good show does not need to be over the top. To me it needs to be cohesive. Remember this is similar to judging figure skating or gymnastics. People all have different ideas of what is artistic. When two people see a movie or play, they can come away with very different ideas of the quality. That being said, I am confused. Andy was asked not to produce more "warrior women." He presented a beautiful collection without “warrior women,” but he was called on that for “losing” his point of view in his design. The judges said that he was to monochromatic, but Irina won with her dark collection. There is no consistency. I would have given the win to Andy.
I did like many of the garments that Gretchen had. She would not have won because of the gray underwear. What was she thinking?
I am a little frustrated about the “cult of personality” in rebukes of Gretchen. Michael C. has at points actually said that he lied when he expressed support for one of the designers. Others were very cutting, too.( No pun intended.) Just saying. Remember that this is edited film.

Re: Project Runway: We're in a New York State of Mind

I agree that the show is edited for drama. I am not sure I would want cameras following me around all day. I really would like to see more of the construction and planning that is needed to create a garment.
As to who is going to win Fashion Week, I think it will be the one who creates the best "show." Two seasons ago, I was quite annoyed that Irina won because she had a dramatic show with those odd little hats and mainly gray clothing. I did not think her collection was better than Carol Hannah's. Seth Aaron won with a highly flashy and somewhat stylized show. So whoever puts together a "SHOW" will win.
In regard to the garments this week, I really liked Gretchen's. To me it was wearable. I like the lines in the skirt. The jacket had an interesting design. What she made was fashonable for women who go to work in the real world, not "Sex and the City" world. I think the judges have different standards. She did really try to step out of her comfort zone, which is something they ask of everyone. When Gretchen does, she is criticized for not staying true to herself.
I did like Mondo's dress from the front. However, what woman wants her bottom to look so pronounced with the white and black hounds tooth and curved black seat?
I have not liked most of "Frederick's of Hollywood" April, nor in your face, edgie Andy( I did like his resort wear and thought he should have beaten April). I am not sure about Michale C.'s work. He does seem to be hit or miss with his creations. I wonder what things he will create for his show.

Re: American Beauty

I have been to see the exhibit. It is beautiful! I loved being able to look at the garments. My hands itched to reach out and touch the fabrics. The Trigere totally amazed me. I loved seeing the Halston creations. It was very enlightening to see how modern designers harken back to earlier designs

Re: Project Runway Season 6 Finale - Tim has a meltdown

I was in such a hurry to comment, that I wrote on the space for episode 13. I agree that Carol Hannah made dresses that women would like to wear.I think she should have won. In season 5, the winner made structural designs that I thought were unwearable by the general public. Again, in this season, the judges went for the "ugly." What is so stylish about wearing a coat over a dressy t-shirt? I knew that Irina had won when the fashion editor for the Herald Tribune International gushed over Irina's clothes. and of course Michael Kors was totally enamored of the little black hats.
I wonder what next season will bring.

Re: Project Runway Episode 13 - Feel the Burn

Have you seen this last show? I know I would not wear the clothes that Irina created. However, I knew she had won when the British fashion editor gushed about the hats. Michael Kors who usually complains when things are the same, adored the little hats, exclaiming how they were all slightly different, but still the same. Bleeh! The last two who have won Project Runway have made clothes unwearable for any woman of normal size. It seems that women in the daily milieu are not the stuff for Project Runway
