I am always inspired by Kenneth King’s articles (my favourite Threads contributor), and especially his article on “fluted ribbon trim” in the December 2012/January 2013 Threads magazine. Suitably motivated, I selected the simple silhouette of the jacket from vogue1028 in order to show off the fluted ribbon trim. I had previously created this jacket in a heavier wool fabric last year, and decided to extend the sleeves to full length.
I experimented with different widths and types of ribbon before deciding on an orange grosgrain ribbon. I followed Kenneth’s instructions on how to make a template for marking the ribbon. This worked very well, as long as one was very accurate with the markings! I added the tiny pearls for extra effect. This is an interesting and fun trim which I would certainly consider using in future projects. The jacket was then teamed up with the McCall’s dress M6394 that I had created concurrently.
Sewing since I was 5 years old (mostly clothes for my dolls at that stage), I have won numerous first prizes at the Perth Royal Show in Western Australia and last year won second prize in daywear in the national Australian Sewing Guild competition (www.aussew.org.au). Dressmaking and creating with fabric remain my passion (or, according to my husband, my obsession).
