This costume was made for my niece who wanted to look like Katy Perry when she was wearing a “Popcorn” outfit. We took a premade top and red skirt and went from there. First was the popcorn. We took a can of spray foan insulation and created the “popcprn”. A quick spray paint in yellow helped the kernels look like buttered popcorn. Next, white panels were sewn around the skirt, with the word “Popcorn” ironed on to every other white panel. Under the skirt is an underskirt made from red organza. The skirt has an elastic waist and can be removed (we all agreed the popcorn may get annoying after a while!). Along the hem were sewn 16 buttons, evenly spaced. From the buttons, the popcorn was added with Fireline (clear nylon used in jewelry making). We took two plastic reels, spray painted them with silver glitter paint, glued a black circle to the back of each reel and then glued velcro to the center of the backs. On the black top, we added velcro to the bust area (for the reels), and velcro for adhering the straps at the top. A belt was made by sewing ribbon strips together and using velcro to secure it in the back. The blue wig was added for pure fun!
