Last night’s episode was both a team and an unconventional materials challenge on Project Runway. First, to explain the challenge (it’s not simple).
In this week’s episode, the designers were taken out to Coney Island. There, they formed seven teams of two, and each team gave away frozen Yoplait yogurt treats (in a product tie-in). The designers had to ask the folks on the boardwalk for their reaction to the treats, and from their responces, each team took three keywords, for example “fresh,” “delicious,” or “smooth.”
Each team then had to win their unconventional materials by playing tried-and-true carnival games. So, as you can imagine, the materials came from balloons, blow-up aliens and fish, straw sombreros, and so on.
Fashionista Kelly Osbourne served as a guest judge, on the panel with Nina Garcia, Zac Posen, and Heidi Klum, while Tim sat in without voicing an opinion the runway critique.
The teams were:
Alexander Pope and Justin LeBlanc.
Miranda Kay Levy and Timothy Westbrook.
Kate Pankoke and Helen Castillo.
Jeremy Brandrick and Ken Laurence.
Dom Streater and Alexandria von Bromssen.
Sandro Masmanidi and Sue Waller.
Bradon McDonald and Karen Batts.
On to the Coney Island prize designs!
The winner
Kate Pankoke and Helen Castillo won, with Helen officially winning the challenge and earning immunity for the next episode.
The loser
Miranda Kay Levy and Timothy Westbrook did not get along at all, and the strife showed in their poorly conceived and constructed garment. Timothy went home after his third consecutive week in the bottom two.
The rest of the designs
Dom Streater and Alexandria von Bromssen created a cute “rave” look. They were a close second in the judging:
Alexander Pope and Justin LeBlanc made a great team, but they didn’t know how to edit their look:
Jeremy Brandrick and Ken Laurence’s design:
Sandro Masmanidi and Sue Waller’s design:
Bradon McDonald and Karen Batts’ design:
A pin for your thoughts
Timothy needed to go home and grow up some more. BUT do you think Miranda treated Timothy well? I think she may not be ready for PR either.
Was the winning design the best choice, in your opinion?
What would you sew with carnival prizes?
All in agreement with the judges, the winner was a winner and the loser was most definately a loser.
Glad to see Mr. sustainable go but I do have to wonder, what kind of upbringing produces such a trainwreck? This guy is just....disturbed. I think his partner is not far behind him, too many unicorns in that town?
Loved the winning look although, I'm not sure how much of that win should have gone to Helen after last weeks meltdown but Kate was gracious enough to give it to her so it's all good.
The third time is a charm, Timothy goes home. He needs to go home, put his big boy panties on and grow up before trying PR again. I don't think that he is a terrible designer but he can not handle the pressure.
I understood why Miranda went into a rage, but she didn’t really have to be so mean! And when several of the other designers laughed and egged her on, well.. shame on them too.
Sandro, what can I say to you. My love hate relationship continues. I was shocked by his ‘women listening to men’ statement and I was disappointed in Sue for bowing down to him.
Kate and Helen’s choice of sombreros all in one color, along with a kite (we all know where that is going, can we say ‘corset’) was a smart choice They were able to construct a dress that was very avant-garde. There was the mandatory corset, everything that Kate creates begins with that, but at least this time it was hidden. Helen certainly redeemed herself with a great design and conceding that perhaps Kate was not a ‘bitch’. After all Kate handed her the win and she needed it.
I loved the winning design. Glad to see the "baby " leave!
To create that dress out of cheap boleros was true creativity! I am not sure that Kate should not have taken a second win but one of those two women should have one. Impressive tranformation of the textiles.
Timothy and Miranda were the height of dysfunction! In the real world you will work with all sorts of people. Timothy is immature and selfish, Miranda insecure and mean. She should go home next. Modern fashion is often disrepectful of most women, Sandro is at least honest about his sexism, not a positive triat but at least honest. I am concerned he will soon punch someone's lights out.
Had i those materials, i would have designed beach or active wear..
