ASG Honors Louise Cutting

Louise Cutting speaks at the ceremony inducting her into ASG's Sewing Hall of Fame.

Last month at the 2014 Annual General Meeting of the American Sewing Guild in St. Louis, Missouri, Threads contributing editor, The Cutting Line Designs pattern designer, and sewing instructor extraordinaire Louise Cutting got a big surprise: she was inducted into the ASG’s Sewing Hall of Fame! The ASG bestows this honor nearly every year as a way to recognize individuals who have had a lasting impact on the home sewing industry.

The ASG Sewing Hall of Fame award committee selected Louise for recognition this year based on her long career in the sewing industry and on her contributions to ASG. “She’s a longtime supporter, and she’s been teaching at our conferences since the beginning,” says ASG executive director Margo Martin.

“She’s so well-rounded, being a contributing editor to Threads and a pattern designer, and having been on the retail end of things, too. She’s been involved in every aspect of the sewing industry and she’s an incredibly generous giver,” Margo adds. “She gives so much of her time and energy and herself to sewers and sewing at a level that’s practically unprecedented. She’s always willing to go the extra mile to help sewers. All those things make her especially loved in the sewing industry.”

Louise says there’s never been a time that she wasn’t sewing, and she has constantly strived to improve garment construction methods. She says: “I always wanted to get better and better at the craft. I do precision sewing. I have done couture, and I have accomplished tailoring and have taught both. But I wanted to master the techniques I saw in very high-end ready to wear. Then I would let others know what I figured out. I knew there was a better way than what we had been seeing for years in the instructions for constructing garments and what was being taught in sewing classes. Teaching others what you figured out, and then in the end to be honored by a great organization like ASG, makes the honor that much sweeter.”

Congratulations, Louise!
