Project Runway: Threads – Episode 4, “Pop Star”

Claire, 13, works on her Katy Perry pop star look.

Project Runway: Threads continues with a new group of teen designers battling for a chance to win a prize package worth more than $25,000. This week, Judges Vanessa Simmons, Ingrid Nilsen, and Christian Siriano were joined by actress and singer Zendaya as guest judge. On the roster for episode four was Brianana, Claire, and Matt.

The “Show Us Your Style” challenge kicked things off. Unlike the previous three episodes, designer and the youngest Project Runway winner Christian Siriano joined Vanessa for the judging. 13-year-old Brianna was first up.

Brianna created a Bohemian-style striped maxi skirt with a flowy top. Christian appreciated that her ensemble was made in knit fabric but wasn’t fond of the color choice of the blouse. Matt, 16, paired a cropped corset in an animal print with a high-low skirt. While Christian liked the designs edgy style, he felt it showed too much skin. Claire, 13, created a strapless that dress featured pleating with a full skirt. Although the dress could have benefited from some fitting adjustments, Christian praised the ambitious designer’s pleating techniques. After reviewing all three designs, the judges announced Claire as the winner of the “Show Us Your Style” challenge. As the winner, Claire was awarded a 15-minute head start on the design challenge.

This week, the teens were asked to create looks for their favorite pop artists. Brianna’s pop-star was Florence and the Machine, Lady Gaga was Matt’s choice, and Claire’s pop-star inspiration was Katy Perry. The three designers were immediately whisked away to the workroom to begin work on their garments.

POP STAR

Per the usual, the contestants were soon introduced the show’s infamous “Surprise Door Twist” challenge. Taking a page direct from Project Runway, the talented teens were asked to create a second look for their pop-stars using unconventional materials. The assistants, not the designers, were sent away to JoAnn’s Crafts and Fabrics in search of supplies. Vanessa quickly returned with the “Be The Boss” twist. The contestants were pleasantly surprised to learn that FIDM students would be assigned to each of them to help complete their looks.

Now, on to the final designs and winner.

Brianna’s winning Pop Star looks for Florence and the Machine:

Although her first look was similar to her “Show Us Your Style” ensemble, the judges appreciated her fabric and color choices. They were blownaway by her feathered garment that featured a long train.

Matt’s Pop Star looks for Lady Gaga:

Matt listened to the judges critiques from the “Show Us Your Style” challenge and created a stunning first look. Although the panel of judges were impressed with his construction skills, they were not thrilled with his second look.

Claire’s Pop Star looks for Katy Perry:

Claire’s first look was inspired by pop icon Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” music video. Unfortunately, Claire’s adult assistant, her mother, forgot to grab some burlap during the unconventional challenge. Without the burlap to create a bubble skirt, Claire had to rethink her design and work with the materials she had on hand.

Did the judges get it right? Whose look do feel was most representative of their pop stars? How do you feel the teens handled the pressure of creating two looks in one day? What construction techniques and design were you most impressed with?
