Pattern Review: Simplicity 1287 Boys’ and Men’s Knit Pullover Shirts

Threads #179, June/July 2015

Sewing Tip: Interface the collar on the zipper view if working with a lightweight knit to give it structure.

Simplicity 1287

These knit shirts have long sleeves and cuffs, a hemline band, and three neckline variations. One option features a crewneck with a collar band and a small triangular patch stitched right below. A second view is a Henley shirt with three center-front buttons. The final option has contrasting shoulder patches and is a quarter-zip style with a stand-up collar. The directions and illustrations are clear. However, if using a rib knit or other figure-hugging fabric, be sure the collar and band lengths provide a snug fit. Our tester also suggests eliminating the topstitching around the neckline base for the zipper view if it could be problematic with your fabric. Ideal main fabrics for the garment include: interlock, two-way stretch, and activewear knits, as well as sweatshirt fabrics, fleece, and velour. For the contrast pieces, select a cotton, suede, or leather material.

(Sized Men’s S-XL for chests 34-48 in. and Boys’ S-L for chests 22-27 in.)

Sewing Tip: Interface the collar on the zipper view if working with a lightweight knit to give it structure.
