Eva Dress: 1947 Dress with Cutouts D40-4185
This V-neck dress replicates a vintage Butterick look. Details abound, including shoulder cutouts and custom shoulder pads. Sleeve options are one-piece tulip sleeves, three-quarter sleeves, or long sleeves with elbow darts and hem slits. The bodice waistline is shaped with gathers, and the A-line, calf-length skirt has a shirred center-front insert. The left side-seam opening is fastened with snaps per the instructions, although the supply list calls for a 9-inch zipper. The self-fabric belt is held by thread carriers. The fashion illustration shows a kick pleat, but the pattern does not include it. The instructions mention back neck darts, but they are not marked on the pattern, and the back neck facing fits without them, so you can skip the darts in the instructions. Our staff seamstress found the instructions omitted some details, such as understitching the neckline facing. They are thorough in other areas, however, such as how to make tailor’s tacks and thread belt carriers. Ideal fabrics include wool crepe, rayon challis, or crepe-back satin.
(Sized 14-48 for busts 32-48 in. and hips 35-51 in.)
Sewing Tip: Face the shoulder cutouts with organza, sewn with a narrow seam allowance, for clean, stable edges.
