Pattern Roundup: Make a Crop Top for Summer
It’s summer and it’s hotter than a pepper sprout here in the Northeast. If a crop top is your way of beating the heat, then you can find a selection of patterns below for knits and wovens, in varying lengths and sleeve options.
The Saguaro Set is a two-piece woven ensemble consisting of a pullover top with plunging V-neckline and elasticized waist pants with pockets. You can add an optional tie closure to the top for more modesty. This flowy set is easy to sew and perfect for summer in lightweight wovens. For a bonus look, turn the top around and wear the V-neck in back.
Five percent of the proceeds from this pattern benefit Give Directly (givedirectly.org). The pattern is available in sizes XS to 7X (bust 32 inches to 60 inches, waist 24 inches to 53 inches, hips 34 inches to 63 inches).
The Weiland Tank is a basic stretch-knit tank top cropped at the waist. The top half of the tank is lined and finished with elastic under the bust, creating a built in shelf bra. Options include a scooped or V-neckline. This pattern is suitable for intermediate sewers and above. Make multiple tanks in all the colors of your wardrobe for summer wear or layering in the colder weather.
Available in a B cup and a combined C/D cup, in sizes A to N. (bust 29 inches to 58.5 inches, waist 24.4 inches to 50 inches).
This woven crop top has side button bands and two neckline options. Version A has a round neckline, version B (shown) has a V-neckline. Choose lightweight fabrics in cotton, linen, silk, or rayon. For a custom fit that minimizes drag lines on this cute top, consider draping the bust darts on the body. Women’s European sizing 34 to 60 (bust 31 7/8 inches to 57 7/8 inches, waist 23 5/8 inches to 49 5/8 inches, hip 33 7/8 inches to 60 inches).
We love this romantic summer blouse for beginner to intermediate sewists. The design can be made as a crop top or a longer version that reaches the high hip. The pattern offers several views: a front-button style; a back-tie version with low back V-neck; and a surplice style where the fronts wrap and tie at the back waist (shown). The short, puffy sleeves are elasticized over the shoulders and at the hems. Women’s sizing 0 to 34 (bust 30 inches to 59 inches, waist 23 inches to 51 inches, hip 32 inches to 60 inches) and includes small bust version (A-B) and a full bust version (C and up).
This pattern is for an easy-to-make, comfortable-to-wear knit surplice top. It includes three sleeve lengths (sleeveless, cap, and long sleeve) and two shirt styles (cropped and hip length). Women’s sizing 6 to 24 (bust 30 1/2 inches to 46 inches, waist 22 inches to 41 1/2 inches, hip 31 1/2 inches to 48 inches).
The Camille is a loose-fitting cropped blouse with a curved, deep V-neckline. The front has two tie closures, designed to leave a slight gap at the center front. The sleeves finish just above the elbow and are shirred to create puffy volume. The pattern is sold in women’s UK sizes 6 to 22 (bust 30 1/4 inches to 47 5/8 inches, waist 22 1/2 inches to 39 3/4 inches, hip 34 1/4 inches to 51 5/8 inches).
This reissued vintage 1976 sewing pattern includes a cropped cape-back blouse that ties in front, two other tops, a floor-length skirt, and wide-leg pants. The skirt and pants have elastic waistline casing. Choose soft, floaty wovens such as voile, lawn, or handkerchief linen. Sizes XS to XXL, which is approximately U.S. sizes 0 to 26 (for bust sizes 29 1/2 inches to 48 inches).
