Lingerie designer, patternmaker, and sewist Maddie Kulig talks about the challenges and rewards of creating undergarments in Episode 80 of the Sewing with Threads podcast.
Plus, there is one thing she knows for sure: “It doesn’t matter who you are or what gender you identify as, you can wear well-fitting lingerie.”
Inclusive Patterns and Instruction
The owner of Madalynne Intimates says she works at being inclusive through providing all the resources needed to sew beautiful lingerie. That could be a bra, panties, slip, corset, or other undergarment. She has written a book, Sew Lingerie (C&T Publishing, 2023), detailing lingerie-making techniques that range from choosing fabric to fitting. In the book, she delves into making sports bras, underwire and wire-free bras, swimsuits, a bodysuit, and more. An amazing bonus is the supplied QR code for downloading many of Maddie’s lingerie patterns.
Lingerie-Making Challenges and Solutions
In the podcast, Maddie explains that the greatest challenges to creating lingerie are finding the right supplies and getting the right fit.
Sewing a piece of lingerie is a quick and easy project, she says. “It’s not hard to sew. What is hard is finding the right supplies.” She says her company spends the time to source, acquire, and sell matching fabrics and notions. She also offers DIY kits, which address the supplies challenge.
The fit challenge is addressed through her class instruction and book. In the podcast, she explains the importance of underwire size and shape. Then she describes how to choose the right underwire and notes, “there is a methodical way to fit an underwire.”
So too, there are “standards to fitting a bra and fundamentals to patternmaking,” Maddie says.
