Threads #227, Fall 2024

Pants with Unique Pockets

Skill level

Other than the fly-front zipper closure, the construction is straightforward. The sewing instructions are easy to follow, but the design is best for an intermediate or advanced sewist.

Size range and fitting

The pattern comes in two size ranges: US 2 to 14/UK 6 to 18 for waists 24½ inches to 34 inches and hips 34 inches to 43½ inches. The second range is US 14 to 26/UK 18 to 30 for waists 34½ inches to 483/4 inches and hips 44 inches to 58½ inches. This is a loose-fitting style. For size 8, there is 3½ inches of ease at the waist and hip.

Fabrics

Ideal for medium-weight fabrics such as twill, denim, gabardine, corduroy, poly or wool crepe, and linen.

Style and sewing details

• This trouser/jean has a mid-high waist, a 7/8 length, and a wide leg. There is also a shorts option.

• It has a shaped waistband, belt loops, a fly-front zipper, front pleats, shaped side pockets, back darts, and patch pockets.

• The front pleats can be folded toward the center front or the sides. The front pockets are distinctive, with rounded, faced edges that wrap to the side back. Various options are given to keep them flat and closed, such as snaps, buttons, or an attached tab sewn into the back patch pockets.

• The instructions and illustrations are correct except for one inconsistency. Step 4 indicates to press and topstitch the center-back seam to the left; the illustration shows the stitching on the right back.

• Consider changing the construction order. Install the fly-front zipper before sewing the pockets and forming the front pleats. This keeps the area flat and eliminates the weight of those features while you work on the zipper.

• Read the instructions before starting to sew. Be mindful of the cutting layouts, and cut the correct number of pattern pieces. Note: The waistband is cut in three pieces.
