Utilitarian-Chic Vest and Jacket
Skill level
The construction takes time due to the multiple pockets and snap-setting. The most difficult step our tester found was squaring off the zipper corner on the zipper pockets.
Size range and fitting
Sized Men’s 34 to 52 for chests 34 to 52 inches and waists 28 to 48 inches. This jacket and vest have a non-tailored fit and are meant for layering. Finished garment measurements, including design and wearing ease, are listed on the back of the pattern envelope.
Fabrics
Denim, medium-weight wovens, bottom-weight fabric. Use a softer fabric for the hood and vest lining. Laminated cotton or waterproof fabrics could work for the jacket.
Style and sewing details
Utilitarian garments with lots of pockets, suitable for outdoor activities. The design pairs a cropped unlined jacket with a lined hood and a lined sleeveless vest.
• The jacket has a snap closure; the vest uses a zipper. The garments are held together via snaps on each side of the front neckline.
• There is a nice variety of pocket styles and closures. The multiple pockets in front, back, and side seam will keep essentials easily within reach. Add more loops for hooks and greater functionality, or omit pockets as desired.
• Pocket placement lines are not indicated on the pattern but rely on you making a template of the finished pocket as a guide and transferring the markings to the garment where you choose.
• Interface the area on the hood where the buttonhole for the drawstring will be stitched. This strengthens the area and prevents stretching over time.
• Instructions have a QR code that leads to a step-by-step sew-along with the designer, Donny Q. It’s especially helpful for visual learners.
• Make sure you have the time to put into sewing this garment. It is worthwhile to sew it well. Beginners with basic sewing skills will be able to tackle this fun design.
