The Beauty of Boro Stitching
Contemporary garments highlight a traditional hand-stitched technique
The following examples of boro stitching may propel you to create your own garment that combines the Japanese mending technique with raw-edge appliqué and fabric layering. You can learn the process of creating this type of jacket or other boro-stitched garment from “Boro Composition” by Rae Cumbie of Fit for Art Patterns, in Threads #228, Winter 2024. In the article, Rae walks through how she made one jacket using this slow-stitching technique coupled with the other techniques. Now, she shares these additional examples—a vest and second jacket.
Rae made these garments by layering complementary fabrics from her stash.
