Korean Inspiration
Skill level
The sewing is moderate, suitable for the confident beginner to intermediate sewer.
Size range and fitting
It is sized XS to 3XL for busts 30 inches to 52 inches, waists 24 inches to 47 inches and hips 33 inches to 53 inches. This dress is designed to be slightly oversized, and the bodice has a generous overlap. Select your size based on your bust measurement.
Fabrics
Use lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics such as linen, cotton, and silk. Avoid heavy fabrics as the full skirt will cause strain on the waistband and bodice. A 54-inch-wide fabric is required. Larger sizes involve piecing.
Style and sewing details
This is a modern wrap dress inspired by the traditional Korean hanbok dress, typically worn for special occasions. The wearer can wrap the long tie around the waist or simply knot it at the right side. The wrapped bodice gives full coverage with no gaping.
- The sewing instructions contain no illustrations, but each step is accompanied by a video link. Before you begin, review the printed instructions and watch the videos. The videos are easy for non-English speakers to follow.
- There is no cutting layout. Lay out the two skirt pieces, then fit in the smaller ones. Abut the straight edges so there are no spaces between the pattern pieces. On size Medium, this allows enough fabric to cut out full-length sleeves on the 3 yards.
- Our tester found extra notches on the bodice front that don’t match anything.
- Make it your own. For subtle contrast, use both sides of the fabric. You can also make the skirt asymmetric, break it up with various color panels, or you can add a hem band of a contrasting color.
