Vintage Illustrated Pattern Magazine
See charming winter fashions from 100-plus years ago
Illustrations of garment designs sold by Butterick Patterns appeared in The Delineator women’s magazine from the 1870s through 1937. The Butterick Publishing Company produced these popular monthly editions to market the patterns, but the magazine also included short stories, advice for the homemaker, recipes, and fashion trends, especially from France. All the major U.S. pattern companies published similar magazines to advertise their latest patterns. Those depicted in The Delineator’s December 1915 issue, pp. 54–55, were described in detail and had fabric recommendations. Shown as dresses, the pattern bodices and skirts were often sold separately. They were available in stores or by mail order for 15 cents each. “Late Conceptions of Winter Styles,” the four ensembles at left, included coat 8035 matched with skirt 8023 and accessory 8001 (foreground), “a practical suit that is very smart in line and a good muff.” The “Styles that Flatter the Figure,” at right, had design 8030 (foreground) “a very attractive afternoon dress” with optional skirt tucks and “plaited” peplum.

I love The Delineator magazine. I became aware of this fabulous publication back in the 70s when I was going thru design school & would find them occasionally at antique & rare book stores.
