Pattern Roundup: Sewing Overalls for Every Body

Overalls are my favorite blend of style and utility—just right for workwear, casual outings, or even dressed-up occasions. Once upon a time, sewing overalls wasn’t an easy option for me. I hadn’t learned how to grade patterns, and pattern companies didn’t offer many options in my size.

Sewing your own overalls offers the opportunity to customize fit, fabric, and features to suit your body and lifestyle—and nowadays, you can find patterns in extended sizes and a variety of styles, ensuring overalls for nearly every body type and every occasion.

Fabric Suggestions

When choosing fabrics for your overalls, consider how the material affects the finished garment. If you’ve got a utility-style pattern, durable fabrics like denim, canvas, twill, or corduroy provide structure and longevity. These fabrics lend a classic and sturdy aesthetic to your overalls.

For a more relaxed and casual vibe, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics such as linen, Tencel, or chambray. These materials can be for creating overalls that are soft, comfortable, and easy to wear in warmer weather or for everyday activities.

If you’re looking to make a statement, consider luxurious fabrics like velvet, silk, or jacquard. These options transform overalls into elegant pieces, making them suitable for special occasions.
