Tailored Vest
Skill level
This line of patterns is for those who already have a solid understanding of sewing basics.
Size range and fitting
The pattern is drafted for a 5-foot 5-inch person and in two size ranges: 34 thru 46 with a B/C-cup and 46 thru 60 with a DD-cup. It fits busts 31-1/2 inches to 57-1/2 inches, waists 23-5/8 inches to 49-5/8 inches and hips 33-7/8 inches to 59-7/8 inches. It is close fitting, and the length extends to the lower hip.
Fabrics
Select stable fabrics like suiting, wool crepe, tweeds, linen, and cotton twill. When making your selection, be aware the full interfacing will add weight, structure, and firmness. Plaids and stripes are beautiful, but seam matching requires additional fabric, extra time, and attention.
Style and sewing details
This tailored vest is fully interfaced and lined. It has a jewel neckline, front and back princess seams, four-button closure, double welt or large patch pockets, and a cut-away lower center front. In the back, there is a partial self-fabric belt with a buckle, which allows for further waist cinching.
• A construction order list gives all seam allowance widths. Plus, there are step-by-step sewing instructions with clear illustrations.
• The website’s resource page has a compilation of helpful resources, including specific tutorials for the more complex steps.
• The seam allowances are narrow and don’t leave room for much fitting, so fit a muslin before starting the final garment.
• The placement for the patch pockets is not marked. You can do this easily as you are constructing the vest, placing them at your preferred height. Button and buttonhole placement are also at your discretion.
• The armhole size is appropriate for a vest. If you intend to wear it alone, consider raising the armholes.
• Our sample is made from a loosely woven, bulky fabric. Working with a fabric that ravels and such narrow seam allowances, our tester had to be careful and pay close attention. For a successful project, she recommends using a stable fabric.
