i am planning on making a 50’s cocktail dress for my daughter out of silk tafetta – close fitting bodice and full skirt. The pattern instructions do not include boning or other ‘construction’ techniques that I,m sure would have been used in a couture dress. Any suggestions on how to get a real 50’s couture look?

See the Threads #93 issue "Couture techniques for every sewer." It featured Vogue 2268 pattern, underrlined with silk organza, lined with China silk, a waist stay,no facings and a hand picked zipper.

Is the dress strapless? if not you really don't need to put boning in it
Have you checked out the post by suesewing in the photo gallery, of a 50-s style cocktail dress, with boning, she made for her daughter? It's gorgeous, and she might be able to give you some tips. Here's the url: http://forums.taunton.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=tp-gatherings&msg=10261.1
(It's post number 1026.1, listed under main heading of "Photo Gallery" as "cocktail dress". It's a recent post).
thanks very much!
