I just got a used copy of Great Sewn Clothes in the mail. It is an old Taunton Press book with twenty some articles selected from Threads magazines from before 1991. I kept checking the book out at my local library to read again and again about Madeleine Vionnet’s secrets, Balenciaga, Norman Norell, Chanel techniques… So I went to www.abebooks.com and found one for $2 !!!!!! (With shipping it was all of $5.50!) Abebooks still has these, at a slightly higher price mostly but an outrageous bargain still.

*happy sigh* I got that book for 2 bucks at a garage sale. Same with Fit and Fabric, plus a gazillion pieces of fabric and old jewelry. I spent around $20-- it was the best garage sale EVER. :D
I wish Threads had more articles like the ones in GSC-- profiliing designers, their work, their philosophies. I would love to learn more about the designers of the 20's and 30's (by far my favorite period in fashion).
I'm glad you know who Madame Vionnet is. I have the wonderful book about her. I also collect sewing books and have the one you mentioned (which is excellent but probably not for beginners), plus a lot of other Taunton books. They are a great resource and learning tool.
Love to hear there are still sewers out there. We seem to be in the minority now.
