Did anyone watch the Academy Awards? Which gowns did you like…and dislike? Helen Mirren was on Oprah the following day. She brought her dress and turned it inside out to show why she loved it so much. She kept saying it was as beautiful inside as out. She said it was wonderfully comfortable because the bra was built into it. I couldn’t help but notice how much the interior resembled the dress in Threads #51. (It seems like I’ve mentioned this article every 3 months!) It explains how to build an evening gown that stays beautiful but allows the wearer to move and be comfortable. I also liked Reese Witherspoon’s dress very much. Which ones, and why, did you like them?

Hi Ralphetta,
I watched almost all of the Awards show - I was sad because I had really wanted to watch it with my mother. She's an excellent quilter/hand sewer and we would have had so much fun howling at some of the "outfits". But, she was out of town... Anyway, I really loved Helen Mirren's gown and I would have loved to have seen her with her gown on Oprah's show! Helen's gown really suited her - it was not too fussy and was great for someone with a slender frame. Cate Blanchett's gown was gorgeous - so simple in design and what fabulous jewelry. I always like her fashion/style choices. And, Anne Hathaway's gown was very pretty - a simple lace gown (although I think it would have been better without that oversized black bow). Catherine Deneuve was tres chic (what else, from her?) but Meryl Streep's outfit (from Prada...) was the ugliest thing on the show. I realize a lot of people will disagree but I liked Jennifer Hudson's gown - it was that awful gold bolero jacket that ruined her look.
There's a book out on Oscar gowns - I must try to remember who the author is as I want to borrow it from the library. There have been some truly gorgeous gowns over the years and some real horrors (remember the swan dress & Cher's outfits?).
Great question!
Julie
I loved Reese's gown, especially the color. I like Penelope Cruz gown with all the cording, but not the feathers on the bottom. I like Beyonce's mint green gown with the stones on them and Kate Winslet's gown. Jessica Biel's gown, I liked, because of the color. Emily Blunt's navy blue gown was beautiful.Marcy
