I’m a sewer but not a pattern maker and have been given the job of sewing 22 dresses for Australia day (Jan 26)for a dance group. As the girls are all different sizes some need a bust dart. How do I add this to a pattern when all I have is 1 size 8 dress to take the pattern from. Or am I mad doing it?

I am guessing from your message that your dress pattern is a non fitted type. With or without darts, if your people have a bust larger than a B cup, you will need to make bust adjustments. If they have a bust smaller than a B cut, you will have to make adjustments. Fit for Real People by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto shows how to add or remove a dart. It's a pretty good book. Other books on fitting should be able to give you the information you need with diagrams and such. You can add a bust dart, but if all of the people are different sizes, not only will you need to make various alterations, but you will need to make individual patterns. I don't know how involved this project is to be or whether a good fit is really important. It's fairly easy to add a dart as every pattern technically has a dart. The ones with no market dart just have it incorporated. It depends on how much time and energy you have. If you cannot find the book or any others of help, please email me, and I'll try to give you information via email on how to do this job. Trina
