I have a question about altering curtains, hope someone can help, I’m a novice when it comes to home decor sewing.
I’ve bought some second-hand curtains for my french windows. They are exactly the right length, but slightly narrow. They had pinch pleats, so I have undone these and plan to sew pencil pleat tape to the top instead, so that they will fit the width of the windows. My question is this – do I remove the buckram, or sew the pencil pleat tape on top of it?

I would sample the buckram and tape together to see if it can be pleated together (I hit my pleats with a hammer to flatten them). If they will pleat go ahead and use both--your header can never be too stiff. If you do this, you will have to stitch vertically pleat lines so that buckram will pleat to match tape.
Now that I look at this, it would be simpler to just remove buckram and add pleater tape. Another very current "designer" way to deal with this problem is to add a coordinating fabric to the side edges--just check out some decorating books.
Hello, I have made lots of curtains and I would remove the tape and the give the fabric a clean and a good pressing bebore starting again.I like the idea of adding onto the sides. That could look very good.
Thank you, both of you. I will take out the buckram then. I like the idea of the contrasting edges, I might try that on another pair.
