Altering the stride in pants

sewingwithwood | Posted in Fitting on

Hi everyone.  I’m really new to this….actually this is my first time.  I’m hoping that someone out there can help me.  I recently had to do a sewing test for a job I applied for in a tailoring shop.  One of the tasks was to “reduce the stride by 3/4 inch”.  I haven’t found out yet if I passed…..but I’m really wondering if I did the right alteration.  I’m unfamiliar with tailoring terms when it comes to “altering the stride”, so I guessed that it would mean reducing the leg seam in the uppermost crotch area by 3/4 inch.  I reduced the front and back leg seams equally.  Does anyone know if this was the correct way to do it?

Probably regional differences, here. Where I live, it's called the "fork," and we only take in the back part of the leg. It is called "stride" on my costume measurement sheet. I measure from the waist at center front, down between the legs, to the waist in center back.

Thanks for the insight.  Based on this, I think I goofed in my testing.  I took in the pants evenly on both the front and back leg (& I wondered about it at the time but couldn't ask any questions).  Next time I'll know.  The test question also asked to adjust the crotch seam so I guess if I'm taking in a full 3/4 inch from the back leg then there would definitely need to be an adjustment to the crotch seat seam or it would ride up between the cheeks.

However, if this adjustment was being done for someone with a flat seat then maybe the crotch seam wouldn't need too much adjusting?  Have you had any experience with this?

I found it a little difficult with the testing because I didn't do the fitting and I couldn't see the person who was getting the end result of the pants.  Tests!!$%&
