How are your knitting projects going? My dark purple Aran is on hold, I’d switched to another lovely pattern out of a Vogue book, only to realise after knitting a Chanel trim band for the bottom that it’s a 12-ply rather than 8-ply (DK) pattern, silly me. I’m rather large, so could possibly take an 8-ply pattern and knit the smallest size in 12-ply, but of course, not the other way around! May be able to adapt it if I really think about it!
The big fabric chain here, Lincraft, were selling off their winter knitting wool stocks, and they had some lovely 12-ply in a grey blue for only 99c (about 40p), so have started a husky man’s Aran for my new son in law. Up to the armholes on the back.
It’s spring here, in short sleeved tops, all the winter woolies packed away. Yesterday was about 7C above average at 28! Are your Autumn days geting chilly already?

Goodmorning from another beautiful sunny day here in the UK.so far no rain,lawn is as dry as dry.I know that it is becoming Autumn,the 1st of the "Robins" have put in an appearance. think that I will start charging the birds rent in the hedge(: finished my cardigan last week,its washed well & my new batch of wool arrrived this am."Sirdar Donegal Tweed".Did you know there is a UK handknitters site which is very lively,only just found it. Thanks for reminding me to get upstairs and start thinking about a winter sweater for the S.O. The man won't wear a winter coat - overheats in a heavy t-shirt, but he wants me to make him a sweater - and says he will wear it. Gotta love someone like that. He wants me to make him something that we both know will make him horribly uncomfortable.
Somewhere, in the bins upstairs, is the perfect yarn. hmmmmm, and i need to work up a tiny pattern of dogs to knit in around one wrist.
June, In the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday it said the UK had had only 9% of its usual September rain until then when you had a deluge, so hopefully your lawn is replenished, and your robins thriving off the early worms. Well done on finishing your original project. Your Sirdar Donegal Tweed wool sounds lovely, is it a tweedy effect of differing colours twisted together? What project do you have in mind?
ehBeth, You have to laugh! Whatever keeps them happy! If you two are a somewhat similar size, perhaps you could make an Aran in a neutral shade of your liking that you could wear once DH realises he won't, maybe more to your size than his from the outset! Why the little band of dogs around the sleeve? What does S.O. mean, by the way?

My S.O. is a bit over a foot taller than I am, and just under 2x my weight. If I put on one of his t-shirts and belt it, I could wear the resulting dress to work!
His sweater will be HIS sweater (or maybe a sofa cover!).
ohhhhh and the little doggies. I have 2 small dogs that we both love a lot.
One of the trademarks of sweaters that I knit, is some little symbol which has a meaning to the recipient - little dancing people, hearts, maple leaves (for the canadian flag) - around one sleeve, just above the wrist ribbing.
I once put in the Roman numerals of the Olympics I was watching while I knit a Norwegian sweater. I agree that a hand-knit sweater should have something distinctive and it's nice to remember the process of making the sweater when I see the numerals. rjf
I've also found that just doing the wrist pattern on one side helps little kids figure out which way is right round when I've made them a sweater knit in the round. =; D
Hello Jeanette.Hope you are well & the lawns are starting to gain colour again(: Wore my new cardigan yesterday.can you believe that this time last Sat:we were sitting in the garden having a drink in glorious evening sunshine,yesterday we had to put the heating on it was so cold.Still it made me come indoors & finish DH's wallhanging for his fuchsia.It was his bd present to him(:& he was really "chuffed"( do you remeber that saying from your UK days).Donegal tweed is a nice mixture of blues/yellow/reds flecks.not as soft to knit with as the "Salsa".We watched on the tv last night a prog:from "Australia" where the desert meets the coral reef & the photography was stunning.Especially the under water ones just amazing.June

The weather is crazy. We had 32 DegreesC on the Thursday, since then it's gone back to needing jumpers, rainy cool and very gusterly Southerlys. maybe someone killed a butterfly whole species in Brazil, and started a chaos theory effect with the meterology, a la rainforest deaforestation. I know of 2 shoe companies here in Aus that have ceased business with Brazilian shoe manufacturers. Interesting, but perhaps no direct link?????.
back to knitting.....You gotta love em! DH said once, enough with the jumpers, I have enough to clothe an army of eskimos! Having been a Rugby union player he has a somewhat stoical attitude in some ways, and never seems to wear the ones I make much. DH prefers to wear tee shirts and put the heater on than wear a jumper!
No progress on the Aran for SIL, as I was fortunate to attend Beating Around the Bush last week in Adelaide. It averaged 17C and I only packed one jumper, thinking spring had sprung.
Jeanette - we're off on a one-week driving tour in the mid-west of the U.S. next week. I'm going to be watching very closely to see whether the S.O. actually puts on something other than a t-shirt and a denim jacket. If he does wear one of his sweatshirts, I'm going to go full steam ahead on a nice big aran for him. Luckily, my bus ride home is just the right length to do about a half sleeve a week. Perfect timing for Christmas.

Yes, Australia is the only continent that is an Island, and the diversity of animals, and environments is so amazing and so fragile. His fuschias must be something truly amazing to see. There is a garden on the next street to us where he has every shade of hibiscus you could imagine, and the only flowers in it!!!!
My roses are all in pots as we have cocos palms that take all the goodness out of the soil, but we also have the most ginourmous turpentine that means it is very hard to grow anthing whatsoever. We get the most glorious coloured parrots that seem to need the sticky residue, and we are a fruit bat magnet when the dates are ripe (inedible for humans).
goodafternoon from a blustery island,the roof nearly was blown off last night):certainly no coloured parrots here flying wild.DH has put his fuchsia's "to bed"ready for next season.I finished the wallhanging using some of the colours of the rossettes he won as a begineer & the colours of some of the plants.Hibiscus are beautiful,but they are possibly not the same type as you have in Australia.Looking forward to getting my magazine,still not arrived yet at the post-office.
