Another lining/inner-lining question
The more I learn about sewing, I find the less I really know. I have a lovely piece of rayon that I want to make into a skirt for my DIL, who has to step up her wardrobe a bit next fall as she will be a first time high school principal as opposed to a classroom teacher. (I had to get that plug for her in there because we are all so proud of her.;)) ) I will also be making a solid color separate jacket from light weight wool that she can pair with other garments.
Back to the original topic, I have in my head either an A-line skirt with godets or a pencil line skirt to probably just above the knee, then a bias cut flounce (fairly deep for the appropriate length), or maybe even a flounce cut into a circle shape. Now, I want the skirt to maintain the hand of the rayon, but I want it to maintain it’s shape, be professional looking, and look good for at least a couple of years.
I am thinking of putting just an underlining in it. Batiste? Knit underlining? Suggestions and critique please. I have plenty of time, I just ran across this fabric in my stash and it’s still a pretty as I thought it was the day I bought it.

Kudos to your DIL on her promotion! IN today's school climate, she'll be challenged but will surely do well.
As to the skirt. because she'll likely be sitting a bit more than she did as a teacher, perhaps the A-line is the wiser choice. Some rayons wrinkle despite their weight. Though you might try the hand-squeeze. Scrunch up a good bit of the fabric in a corner & see how it responds when let free. Which ever, a lining matters. MO. If the knit is light enough, it's possibly the way to go. Again, because of the sitting factor. A batiste would work I guess, but then there might be stress at the side seams. Sitting wear I would think.
Is it a surprise? Perhaps asking her preference is in order.
As an aside - where oh where did I "find" the preview button. It eludes me on my screen. Or else I'm totally missing what I should be seeing.

Now then I can't find the preview tab again. I can find it if I go to one of my previous posts and click on the edit tab at the top, then the preview tab appears at the bottom. I have NO IDEA how it appeared on my original post, because I don't think I was in the edit mode, but who knows, I could be having a senior moment. The only thing I am sure of is that the preview tab was present when I posted my original post.....
It won't be a surprise to her, but I did want to go in with some ideas and recommendations. The more I think about it the more I agree with you. I don't think I can make the rayon substantial enough for a slim skirt. Besides I am afraid the flow of the rayon will be disrupted -- which was my reason for the flounce at the bottom.
I am still open to suggestions and comments from any and all.
The current school climate is decidedly not good. The school where she currently teaches language arts to 6th graders is an exclusive 6th grade campus, and many of her students have gang tattoos on them. She is going to another location for the principal's job. She just completed her Masters and will start on her doctorate in the next couple of years so that she can teach Education at the college level. She wants this experience under her belt so she can say she's been there and done that.
Interesting to read your Edit tab is at the top. It comes up on the bottom on my screen. For me, the only certainty in the all of this transition is it continues to befuddle.
I'm guessing were we in our previous more familiar territory, you'd have other than my input on making your DIL's skirt/jacket. Hopefully some other members wil reply - eventually.
You've every reason to take comfort in her accomplishment. Indeed whatever experience she can garner the better. To my knowing, her field has yet to be hit by the you're-too-qualified-for-the-job bit that has been heard by so many of the unemployed.
When your project is completed, please post how it all went.

I will post pictures. I talked with her tonight and she's decided on the A-line with the godets. I remembered after I talked with her that I have a pattern here that makes a skirt with asymmetrical seams that so around -- if that's the best way to describe it. I will find the pattern and post it so you can see what I'm talking about.
I agree the uncertainty of the site is most likely the reason for few responses. Remember the good old days when we'd have a several day discussion with multiple posts going back and forth rapid fire as quickly as a regular conversation when a question like this was posted? I wonder if the IT section is keeping track of the traffic on the site as compared to the original site. I know I would be doing that if I introduced a new system to the users.................. But that's just me.

As to IT paying attention to the reduced traffic - possibly. But overall I'm guessing there's a limit as to what can be done. I'd guess some members found the navigation just to problematic.

Woo hoo! I admire those who work with children. It's soooo not the school environment we all knew when we were coming up.
And what a blessing she has in her wonderful MIL!
