Embellishments! Or felt the sweater and make a hat out of the felted “fabric”.

I saved one by embroidering (with a machine) tiny flowers over the holes. I backed the area with some sturdy cotton (fused it with the sweater so it couldn't stretch) in the same colour as the sweater and then trimmed it close to the embroidery. I didn't want it to look like a repair so I embroidered a few dotted over the front so they looked like they'd always been there and not just a repair.

I mend sweater holes all the time. They're sometimes invisible and sometimes not, but they are wearable and don't look crappy. I even have a few people who pay me to mend their sweater holes (hah!).
But really, lots of good suggestions on rocking the holes and there are lots of great ways to mend them into a fashion statement.
