Back Closing for Corset-Style Top

anneelsberry | Posted in General Discussion on

Looking for some ideas on how to close the back of a corset-style top. I’m using a Vogue pattern to make a fitted, boned top and skirt out of black dupionni. However, the original pattern is a dress with a zipper and I’m changing it to a skirt and top. If this were a ballet costume, I’d use a lycra panel across the back and a double row of heavy duty hooks and eyes. But its couture, so I think I need something more subtle and something the wearer can get into without a dresser. Any ideas?

Somebody put a stop payment on my reality check!

The only idea I have, right off the top of my head, is an invisible zipper in the back or side, placed "upside down," so the open end of the zip is at the waist. She could pull the corset on over her head, and pull the slider down to her waist to close the garment.

I use hook and eye tape for corset tops and that works well.  It is available in black.  There are short separating zippers made for corset tops too, but I haven't tried those.

Go for the period detail. Lace it! Put one corset bone on the outside of your line, then Punch the holes with a sewing awl, spread them with a size 6 or 7 knitting needle, and stitch around the holes with a tight buttonhole stitch, several times around - respreading with the knitting needle to keep the hole open to the right diameter. Then pick a good looking cord to use as the lacing. If your client can fasten her bra herself, she can tie a bow in the lacing herself. It looks right.
