baffled by embroidery project from En…

A friend brought me a gift from England. It is a lovely rectangular piece of cloth with finished edges, and it is is stamped with x’s for embroidery. However, the x’s are far tinier than any I’ve ever seen before — about the size of counted cross-stitch x’s.

The tiny x’s would seem to call for fine thread, but the cloth is not tight at all. It is like voile. Fine thread would come undone through the big holes in this cloth.

Does anybody know what is supposed to be done with this item?

Well I live in England, but I have not seen anything like this. Could it be intended for a form of shadow work, using a running stitch across the cloth going up-down at the crosses?

*Would it be possible for you to scan the design and attach it? Perhaps if we could have a look at it, someone could offer a suggestion...
