basics knit vs. woven article in threads

sewnstuff | Posted in Feedback on Threads on

On page 24 of the current issue of _threads_ (Oct/Nov 2005) if you have, say, just a swatch of woven fabric, how do you tell which threads are “lengthwise” and which are “crosswise”?

I will pull in each direction to see which has the most/least stretch.   It's not going to stretch like a knit, but USUALLY the lengthwise grain has little to no stretch whereas the crosswise grain will have some.   Occasionally I've gotten fabrics where the stretch runs along the length rather than width but without the selvage attached you can't worry about that.
